Mission Statement

The West Chester University community embraces the concept that effective academic advising is a collaborative teaching and learning process between the student and the faculty advisor.  Effective advising should assist the student in achieving their academic, professional and personal goals.  Faculty advisors will strive to provide accurate, timely and current information, thus establishing the framework around which students will construct their academic program of study.

The Pre-Major Academic Advising Center (PMAA) provides support to undergraduate students prior to admission to an academic major. The assignment to PMAA either reflects the student's own choice or a designation by the University because:

  1. The student does not meet all of the preparation and/or academic requirements for a particular major, or
  2. A student's prospective major has reached its maximum enrollment for the academic year or semester.

Pre-Major Students are encouraged to take:

  • Pre-requisite courses in their intended major and/or
  • Courses in a particular major program because of implied interests

Pre-Major Academic Advisors:

  • Assist students in interpreting University and departmental policies and requirements
  • Assist students with appropriate course selection
  • Make referrals and discuss vocational and career interests

Together, the advisor and the student develop an educational plan of sound strategies for success.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the time you declare your major and leave PMAA, you will be able to

  • navigate the University;
  • understand yourself better;
  • assert your goals and needs;
  • participate in extra and co-curricular activities;
  • take better advantage of all the resources on campus;
  • understand student governance; and
  • recognize when you need help, and ask for it - we'll help you find the right place to go or the answers you need.
