Student Recreation Center
WCU's Student Recreation Center is currently under construction with a planned opening date of August, 2012. Designed by Moody Nolan Architects, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio and the Spiezle Group in Media, Pennsylvania, this new exciting facility will be a welcomed addition to student life on campus, providing a gathering place that will offer a wide variety of activities promoting wellness and a healthy lifestyle. The 72,575 square-foot Student Recreation Center will include “state of the art” features such as an extensive fitness area on two levels, elevated walking/jogging track, two-court gym, multi-activity court, spinning room, aerobic studios, racquetball/squash courts, a three-story climbing wall, social lounges, and a “hydration station” for refreshments.
The University’s commitment to sustainability will be highlighted in two green roofs, solar panels, a live green wall, and the usage of a number of recycled materials in the interior part of the building. The new Student Recreation Center will also be tied into the campus geothermal system that heats and cools buildings using ground sources.
The project, funded by student fees, has directly involved students in the design and planning process over the years. We owe many thanks to former and current student leaders who have shown incredible enthusiasm and dedication in working on the Student Recreation Center project so future generations of students could enjoy such a facility.
We were very proud to have the official Student Recreation Center Ground-Breaking Ceremony take place on October 1, 2010 as part of Homecoming Weekend (photos are from that symbolic event).
