Five Phases of the Project

Creating a Shared Vision

Phase I:     Initial Proposal Meeting(s), Focus Groups (Fall 2009)

  • Presentation of proposal to the Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee & other constituent groups
    • The meetings prepare the campus community for the climate project and have community input into the project process
  • Delineate and conduct focus groups
    • The focus groups and interview participants are discussed, agreed upon, and solicited by the Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee

    Develop protocol for focus groups

    • Protocol is developed and shared with the Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee for approval.
    • Focus group peer facilitators are selected and trained by the consultant.

Phase II:     Assessment Tool Development, Communication Plan, IRB Proposal (January-February 2010)

  • Development of assessment tool
    • Development of paper-and-pencil and/or web based survey instruments
  • Develop communication plan for the assessment
    • Coordination with the Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee on the marketing and communication plan strategy (e.g., letter of invitation, talking points to be shared among the constituent groups)
  • IRB proposal
    • Development of proposal in collaboration with institutional contacts

Phase III:     Survey Implementation & Data Analysis (March - June 2010)

  • Survey administration (design, methods, sampling) and monitoring
    • Consultation with the Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee and other constituent representatives on the strategy for administration that will yield the highest response rates
  • Data coding and database management
  • Data analysis (descriptive statistics, frequency tables) as deemed appropriate by Rankin & Associates

Phase IV:     Development and Presentation of Report (July - August 2010)

  • Development of draft report (executive summary, data presentation, and report findings)
    • The Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee will review the draft report and provide consultant with recommended revisions
    • The Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee will review the recommended revisions with the consultant and agree upon said revisions for inclusion in the final report
  • Development of final report (executive summary, data presentation, and report findings)

Presentation of final report to the Campus Climate Survey Advisory Committee & other constituent groups

Phase V:     Facilitate Planning Retreat (Fall 2010)

Assist the community in developing a Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Community through facilitation of a half-day retreat. The plan may include for example:

  • Well-defined goals
  • Specific intervention actions
  • Person(s) responsible for carrying out the actions
  • Time-frame for implementation of each action
  • Costs for action implementation
  • Outcome assessment
  • Accountability measures
