Responsibilities: Teaching: Teach Field Botany and Intro Biology labs. May also teach Plant Communities, Humans and the Environment, General Ecology, Population Biology, Wetlands, and upper level special topics courses, or graduate courses, as needed. The Plant Ecologist will be expected to offer a new undergraduate course in his/her area of expertise on global climate change. The teaching load at WCU is 12 student contact hours per week per semester. Advising: Advise biology majors regarding academic planning and scheduling. Faculty must schedule 5 hours of advising/consultation time each week for students. Research: Establish an active, externally funded research program involving graduate and/or undergraduate students. Faculty are expected to present results at national meetings and publish in refereed journals. Service: Contribute to the university community and the department by serving on committees, helping to recruit potential students, and performing other services as needed. >BR> Requirements: Earned doctorate in Ecology, Botany or related discipline; research involving plant responses to global climate change, with a focus on areas such as physiological ecology, community composition, ecosystems ecology, and/or biogeography. Must be qualified to teach upper division courses in Ecology and Plant Biology. Finalists must successfully complete interview process and teaching demonstration. Preferences: Additional desired skills or interests include a strong background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and landscape ecology. General Information: Approximately 11,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students attend West Chester University (WCU), located 25 miles west of Philadelphia in scenic southeastern Pennsylvania. The Biology Department has approximately 400 undergraduate majors in 5 different concentrations, and 50+ graduate students in the MS program. The department maintains excellent plant growth facilities, including one greenhouse used primarily for teaching and a second used for research. We have a wide variety of new microscopy equipment including a laser scanning confocal microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscopes, and a laser dissection microscope. Also available is a new microtechnique laboratory. The department houses the Darlington Herbarium, which is one of the most historically important herbaria in the eastern US and houses over 20,000 specimens. WCU has the latest GIS spatial analysis and modeling software including ESRI, 3D Analyst, HAZUS, and SWAT. WCU owns the Robert B. Gordon Natural Area, comprised of approximately 150 acres of mixed natural habitats located on campus, which is available for teaching and faculty research.
