Grades: Calculate GPA

How to Calculate Your GPA

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is determined by dividing your total Quality Points earned by the courses you have attempted by the total number of Credit Hours you have attempted. The Quality Points earned for a course are the number of credits the course is worth multiplied by the numerical value of the grade you earned:

Grade Value
A 4.00
A- 3.67

Grade Value
B+ 3.33
B 3.00
B- 2.67

Grade Value
C+ 2.33
C 2.00
C- 1.67

Grade Value
D+ 1.33
D 1.00
D- 0.67

Grade Value
F 0.00

Example Calculation

The following example is based on six courses attempted:

Course Credits Hours Attempted: Grade Earned: Credit Hours Earned: Numerical Value of Grade:  Calculation Quality Points Earned:
1st Course 3.0 A 3.0 4.00 3.0 x 4.00 12.00
2nd Course 3.0 C+ 3.0 2.33 3.0 x 2.33 6.99
3rd Course 4.0 B- 4.0 2.67 4.0 x 2.67 10.68
4th Course 2.0 F 0 0 0 x 0 0
5th Course 3.0 A- 3.0 3.67 3.0 x 3.67 11.01
6th Course 0 P 3.0 - - -
TOTALS 15.0 - 16.0 - 15.0 x 2.71 40.68

The "F" grade for the fourth course counts as 2 credits attempted, but 0 credits earned. In this example, the sixth course is assumed to be a 3 credit course so the "P" grade counts as 0 credits attempted, but 3 credits earned. Therefore, in this example, the total credits attempted = 15.0 and the total credits earned = 16.0.

The GPA is computed by dividing the total quality points by the total credit hours attempted. The GPA for these six courses is 40.68 / 15.0 = 2.71

The total quality points earned can be computed by multiplying the total credit hours attempted by the overall GPA, in this example, 15.0 x 2.71 = 40.68.
