About The Hands-on Workshops

The RECAP Planning team is offering four hands-on workshops that we believe embody the needs and challenges of today's higher education faculty. Each workshop will use a scaffolding approach, consisting of three sub-topics that will sequentially build the skills of attendees.

Anderson Hall Room 001 - Capturing Statistics for Grading and Assessment

Noni Kline
West Chester University (D2L Support Services)

Desire2Learn offers multiple student assessment options through the use of Dropbox assignments, Discussion Boards, and Quizzes. Did you know that there are also more detailed assessment features built into Desire2Learn that enable faculty to view and export in depth statistical reports from those tools? Learn how to set up Gradebook, Dropbox items, Discussion Boards and Quizzes with the intent of obtaining a variety of course level data. We will also discuss assessment data from Rubrics and advanced Excel functionality to manipulate exported data.

Anderson Hall Room 004 - Online, Real-Time, Anytime: Web Conferencing with Collaborate

Darla Ausel, Suzanne Homan
Clarion University (Learning Technology Center)

Whether you are just exploring, getting started or already using the Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing tool, this workshop will explore the comprehensive virtual collaboration platform as it is used through Desire2Learn. By participating as students in a live Collaborate session, attendees will experience web conferencing from the student perspective, and learn best practices for facilitating virtual classrooms. This workshop will explore the advantages and uses of Web Conferencing for online teaching, student group work, virtual office hours, meetings and lecture recording.

Anderson Hall Room 017 - ePortfolio: From Concept to Reality

Tina Selvaggi, Sally Winterton
West Chester University (College of Education)

Desire2Learn ePortfolio is an application that enables learners to illustrate their experience by collecting, sharing and reflecting on items they have created over a period of time. During this workshop, attendees will gain conceptual insight from early adopters of ePortfolio, in addition to learning how to create, organize, reflect and share artifacts that can later be assessed, or used in presentations. Attendees are encouraged to bring digital materials (documents, images, and videos) as they will be building their own ePortfolio!

Anderson Hall Room 019 - Digitizing, Creating and Streaming Media

El Walton, Joe Watts
West Chester University (Digital Media Center / TV Studio)

With the abundance of High Definition cameras and hand-held devices (smart phones, tablets, i-Phone etc), digital media is relatively easy to come by, but what if video is still on VHS, or DVD? How does that content get turned into digital media? Furthermore, once the final product is ready for students to view, how do we optimize the video so that everyone can view it regardless of the device, connection speed, and also meet ADA standards? In this workshop, attendees will learn how to overcome those hurdles, in addition to creating, editing, and streaming digital media.
