Logo Policies

Policy on the Use of the University Logo, Official Stationery, University Seal, Athletic Logos, and Athletic Stationery

In the interest of providing a uniform image for the University, individual logotypes or seals may not be used by schools, departments, or other academic and administrative units of the University. Requests for exceptions to this policy should be made in writing to the Office of Publications and Printing Services.

There may be times when a logotype or design motif is developed for a special event or a continuing series of activities sponsored by a University unit. These must, however, have advance clearance from the Office of Publications and Printing Services. Such clearances are designed to ensure the quality of materials being used to avoid image problems.

Exceptions to the logotype policy will be made principally for units of the University that have a special mission. The exceptions will be granted only after approval of written justification. Examples include the Capital Campaign, Annual Fund, and George Morris Philips Society. This policy does not apply to the logos of student organization.

University Logo

The logo, which consists of a three-dimensional type font using West Chester University’s acronym, WCU, sitting on a “base” with the University’s full name, was adopted in May 2013. The solid, chiseled letters are a representation of the quality, excellence, and substance of the educational experience students receive at West Chester University. The base, which consists of strong parallel lines and the school’s name, symbolizes the sound foundation of the University itself and its enduring tradition as an educational institution.

The logo should not be altered or modified in any way, and it should not be blended with other designs, such as old logos, the University seal, the athletic symbol, organization logos, drawings, or additional lettering. The WCU acronym is not to be used apart from the lettering or base; both elements must remain so the WCU is not mistaken with other institutions that have the same acronym. The official colors for the logo are purple (Pantone 269) and gold (Pantone 123), preferably against a white background; while other background colors may be used, the logo should remain legible against alternative colors and not clash with them. On a dark background, such as purple or black, the WCU acronym and lines should remain gold with the West Chester University knocked out in white type. The logo also may be used as one color, either purple or black. Other colors should not be used. The type font is Cambria. While the logo can be used in smaller sizes, it should not be reduced to the point where it is illegible.

Samples of the one-, two-, and reversed (white type) logos appear below:

Please note that logos used for printed materials should not be downloaded from the web since the resolution will be too low for printing and will result in a poor-quality representation. Requests for the logo should be made to the Office of Publications and Printing Services or the Graphics and Printing Department.
The logo must appear on all official University stationery, publications, announcements, and websites. All units of the University except student organizations will use the standard University letterhead with departmental imprint. Any student organization using the University's official symbols must follow the regulations for publications, websites, clothing, or other materials. The policy for students appears in the Ram’s Eye View Student Handbook, http://www.wcupa.edu/_services/stu.lif/ramseyeview/.

Stationery (University Logo)

Letterhead

The logo is printed in the center of the page. The office or department name, West Chester University, office/department address, city, state, zip code, phone and fax numbers, and main University web address are centered under the bottom rule. The type font is Cambria. Only office or department names are to be used for official letterhead; stationery is not to be personalized with individual names, addresses, phone numbers, or non-University e-mail addresses. While the two-color (purple and gold) logo is preferred on stationery, offices may opt for letterhead and/or envelopes in one color (purple or black only) for large-volume mailings to save the expense of two-color printing. Official letterhead will be printed on 24# Mohawk Super Fine Ultra White paper. The line "West Chester University of Pennsylvania is a member of the State System of Higher Education" is centered at the bottom of the sheet and must appear on the letterhead.

Envelopes

The logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the return address, with the office name; West Chester University; building and room number (optional); and city, state, and zip code printed flush left underneath the bottom rule of the logo. Official envelopes will be printed on 24# Mohawk Super Fine Ultra White, matching the letterhead stock. The return address may be printed in either one- or two-color versions, as explained above.

Envelope

The use of department rubber stamps on stationery or envelopes is not permitted.

Business Cards

The logo appears in the center of the card. The person's name and title (degrees are optional) are immediately centered under the bottom rule of the logo. Building and room locations; city, state, and zip; phone and fax numbers; and e-mail address are centered below the rule. No individual names, home addresses, personal phone numbers, or non-University e-mail addresses are permitted. Since only so many lines will fit on a business card, employees with more than one title should consider having separate business cards printed. Official business cards will be printed in the two-color format (purple and gold) on 80# white cover stock.

Personalized Memo Sheets and Action Pads

Personalized memo sheets with the employee’s name, title, office, and phone number(s) have been designed to include the WCU logo. The pads will be white stock with the University’s purple ink. Action pads with the employee’s name and title will be printed in black ink on white stock.

The above items – letterhead, envelopes, business cards, personalized memo sheets, and action pads – are all considered official University stationery and must follow the established graphic design without exceptions or individualized preferences. Official stationery is available in the Graphics and Printing Department, located in the Warehouse on Matlack Street, which employs professional graphic artists who will do the layout/design for all of the above items. Outside vendors are not permitted to print official stationery without permission from the director of publications and printing services; orders must be placed through the on-campus print shop.

University Seal

WCU University Seal

The University seal is the official identification of West Chester University. The seal is used on official ceremonial and academic documents such as commencement and dedication programs, and certificates. The seal may be printed in black, purple, or gold (one color only).

Athletic Logo/Mascot

Golden Ram Logo

The Golden Ram logo is a modern graphic approach to West Chester University athletics. With its long history, the ram connects a sense of tradition with the modern day era of WCU athletics. The logo should not be altered or modified in any way (including caricatures), and it should not be blended with any other designs, such as the WCU logo, old logos, the University seal, organization logos, drawings, or additional lettering.

There are two versions of the ram logo. One is just the ram, while the other has both the ram and circular "West Chester University" and "Golden Rams" around its circumference. Either may be used, but it is preferred that the ram by itself be used when "West Chester University" appears somewhere else on the cover of the publication.

The official colors for the logo are purple (Pantone 269) and gold (Pantone 123). Metallic gold, Pantone 871, also can be used. The logo should appear in one color (purple preferred) or two colors (purple and gold), or in black. The logo should not be reversed out (white knocked out from a colored background); rather, a white outline around the ram logo should be used so the ram will remain in color. The font is Clearface. The logo cannot be used in a smaller format than it appears on the envelope and business card (5/8" wide x 1" high).

WCU Cipher

The WCU cipher is a graphic interpretation of West Chester University's acronym specifically designed for athletics. It provides a unique, recognizable symbol of West Chester University athletics. The cipher should not be altered or modified in any way, and it should not be blended with any other designs, such as the new WCU logo, an older version of the WCU cipher, the University seal, organization logos, drawings, or additional lettering.

The official colors for the cipher are purple (Pantone 269) and gold (Pantone 123). Metallic gold, Pantone 871 also can be used. The cipher should appear in one color (purple preferred) or two colors (purple and gold), or in black. The WCU cipher may be reversed out (white knocked out from a colored background). Since the type is a stylized font, it should not be reproduced without an official electronic version that can be obtained from the Sports Information Office, the Office of Publications and Printing Services, or the Graphics and Printing Department. The cipher cannot be used in a smaller format than what would appear on an envelope and business card (5/8" wide x 1" high).

Stationery (Ram Logo)

Letterhead

The ram logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the page. The rule, which ties together the address and phone number, must be present and remain a constant element perpendicular to the logo; the rule is not to be moved up or down. Type elements are the office name and address printed flush left above the rule with the telephone and fax numbers printed flush right. Office (not personal) e-mail address can follow the phone numbers. Addresses may include the building name and room number. The Graphics and Printing Department has the official list of athletic department addresses. Official letterhead will be printed in purple on 20# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory paper. The athletic Web site will be located at the bottom above the letterhead above the State System of Higher Education tag line.

Envelopes

The ram logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the return address, with the office name; building and room number (optional); institution name; and city, state, and zip code printed to the immediate right of the logo. A rule, which is perpendicular to the logo, follows the bottom line of the address. The rule must remain constant and cannot be moved up or down. Official envelopes will be printed in purple on 24# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory, matching the stationery stock. Graphics and Printing has the official list of athletic department return addresses.

Business Cards

The Ram logo appears in the upper-left corner of the card. The person's name and title (degrees are optional) are flush left above the rule, which is perpendicular to the logo and must remain a constant element on the card; it cannot moved up or down. Building and room locations; city, state, and zip; phone and fax numbers; and e-mail address are flush right below the rule. Note: A maximum of five lines of type can be used above the rule and five lines below the rule (no exceptions). No home addresses or phone numbers are permitted. Official business cards will be printed in purple on 80# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory card stock.

The above items - letterhead, envelopes and business cards - are all considered official University stationery and must follow the established graphic design without exceptions or individualized preferences. Official stationery is available in Graphic and Printing.

Questions should be addressed to Cynthia Bednar, director of publications and printing services, 610-436-2231, or James Zulhke, sports information director, 610-436-3316.

Official Colors

The official University colors are purple (PMS 269) and gold (PMS 123).
