Leading Student Affairs Professional Part of Speakers Series on Campus Climate

On Oct. 29 and 30, the University of Pittsburgh’s vice provost and dean of students – a nationally-known and respected professional in student affairs – is lecturing and conducting workshops on issues related to student retention, diversity and how students can help make their campuses free from acts of intolerance.

On Monday, Oct. 29, Kathy Humphrey will give a talk entitled, “A Commitment to Make a Difference” at 4 p.m. followed by a discussion. Tuesday, Oct. 30, she will give two additional lectures: “A Call to Retain” and “Sitting in the Classroom from Our Perspective: The Diverse Voice” at 10 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively.

Both presentations will take place in the Sykes Student Union building on West Rosedale Ave. and are free and open to the public.

During her 20-year career in higher education, Humphrey has focused much of her research and work on helping traditional age college students find their purpose.  Before her appointment as vice provost and dean of students at the University of Pittsburgh in 2005, she served as vice president for student development at Saint Louis University. During her five years there, Humphrey developed living and learning housing options and initiated first- and second-year experience programs.

In 2000, Humphrey received the University’s Mary Bruemmer Award as the administrator who contributed the most to improving campus life for students. A year later, St. Louis University re-named its International Student Federation diversity award, The Kathy W. Humphrey Award for Diversity in recognition of her work with students.

A graduate of Central Missouri State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in education, Humphrey earned her master’s degree in higher education administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and her doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Louis University.

For the past 15 years, Humphrey has traveled the country serving as keynote speaker or workshop facilitator for over 50 universities and organizations.
