George P. Drake, Jr. describes himself on his C.V. as “a progressive educator…; a committed teacher educator…; [and] a focused collegiate administrator… .”

Those qualities are some of the reasons Gov. Tom Corbett selected the associate dean of West Chester’s College of Education to serve on the Pennsylvania Professional Standards and Practices Commission. Confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate this spring, Drake will serve on the commission through January 2016.

The commission provides leadership for improving the quality of education in Pennsylvania by establishing high standards for preparation, certification, practice and ethical conduct in the teaching profession. Drake is one of 13 voting members who are charged with promoting and enforcing Pennsylvania’s Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators. The commission provides educational outreach programs to the educational community, advocates with the Department of Education and the State Board of Education, and oversees and enforces the professional educator discipline system. It holds regular hearings every other month for a full day, and on an ad hoc basis when necessary.

Drake says he is honored to serve in this role “and provide leadership through my work on the Commission. I feel very strongly about the need for (1) strong educator preparation in Pennsylvania; (2) a strong framework for ethical and professional conduct within our profession; and (3) a means of protecting the well-being of the children of the Commonwealth.”

Drake joined the College of Education’s Department of Special Education faculty in 1994 and has served both the University and the College in a broad array of roles. An educational leader, he is the College’s Associate Dean for Curriculum and Accreditation with responsibilities that relate to assessment and accreditation (NCATE, SPA, PDE), curriculum and student issues. As associate dean, he led the institution through a very successful NCATE accreditation visit in March 2014. He also served as interim dean of the college in 2010-2011.

Currently, Drake is co-chair of the WCU Distance Education Advisory Committee (2011-present); the institutional representative to the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (2011-present); and beginning this year, a member of the Student Success Network.
Since July 1, 2013, Drake has represented the PASSHE institutions on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Association of College and Teacher Educators. He serves on the Associate Membership/Sponsorship and Budget Work Group and the Nominations and Elections Committee. His term expires in 2016.

As of 2014, he is also an inaugural member of the Prezi Educators Society, a community-based idea accelerator program for educators and academic leaders to exchange ideas and partner in innovative, impactful ways.
