West Chester University -- 125 Years
Normal School Movement
A framed broadside announcing a public meeting to be
held on August 23, 1869 for those people who were
interested in establishing a normal school in West Chester
to provide teachers for the First Normal School District
(Chester, Montgomery, Delaware, and Bucks Counties)
The meeting was called by Board of Trustees of the West
Chester Academy. During the meeting a resolution, proposed
by Dr. William Darlington, was passed. This resolution
endorsed the idea of establishing a normal school in West
Chester and created a Committee of Fifteen to work with the
Board of Trustees of the West Chester Academy to establish
a normal school.
