Department Specifics: The Department of Biology offers six specialized areas of study, including a new concentration in Marine Science.  The concentration in Medical Technology requires a fourth year hospital internship.  Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA to apply for an internship and completed internships will give students 26 semester hours for the year.

Department Specifics: An internship in Chemistry is an off-campus work or research experience that can take place in a variety of industrial, governmental, and academic laboratories.  Internships are required for the Forensic and Toxicological Chemistry concentration and optional in other Chemistry degree programs.  Regardless, all internships are by permission of the department, only. Forensic and Toxicological Chemistry students should contact Dr. Starn or the department chair concerning internships. Department Specifics: Communication Studies students with a 2.8 or above overall GPA and a 3.0 or above GPA in the major may obtain internships through the department to obtain hands-on work experience for credit. These opportunities are as vast as the departmental focus but include positions in the areas of event planning, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, lobbying and politics, human resources, promotions, and more. Students may work in internships for credit hours from 3 to 15 over one or more semesters.

Department Specifics: Under the current degree requirements, each Computer Science major can complete one internship. This internship (CSC400, a 6 credit course) requires a total of 14 weeks of work or 560 hours, which may be completed on a full time or part time basis and consequently spread out over more than one semester. Students must have a C- or better in select required courses as well as an overall major GPA of 2.5 or better and a Math GPA of 2.0 or above. Department Specifics: The Department of English strongly encourages its BA majors to complete an internship. Completing both on- and off-campus internships, our majors have gained experience in a wide range of fields. Such experiences demonstrate that it’s not what one can do with an English degree that’s the question, but what one can’t do! Our students’ internships have enabled them to perform editorial work and proofreading; write press releases; design newsletters, brochures, and web pages; create and conduct questionnaires; work in marketing campaigns, and participate in management training, among many other activities. Recent organizational placements include Philadelphia-area publishers, local media, public-relations organizations, corporate groups, nationally-based volunteer organizations, sports organizations, and libraries. Each intern must meet with the department’s internship coordinator and complete an internship letter of agreement before pursuing an English internship.

Department Specifics: Business and Technical Writing minors are required to complete an internship, which is usually scheduled at the conclusion of coursework.  Interns complete 120 hours of work per 3 credits.  Together with their faculty advisor, students choose an internship site that offers the opportunity to practice professional writing strategies that meet the organization's needs.  Students have interned in a variety of sites on campus and off campus in nonprofits, small businesses and corporations.

Department Specifics: The Department of Geology and Astronomy prepares students for careers in geoscience and geoscience education. Geoscience is an integrated study of the Earth, its geologic history, composition and structure, resources, natural hazards, atmosphere and oceans, and its environment in space. Students are encouraged to participate in an internship (ESS 460: Internship (1-18 credits) where they are able to work with industry, or local, state, or federal government agencies under faculty supervision. Department Specifics: The History Department offers opportunities for internships with a broad range of placements and projects, including museums, archives, historical societies, and public agencies.  Hosting agencies of recent internships include Colonial Williamsburg, Eckley Miners’ Village, Ellis Island, Ephrata Cloister, Greater Philadelphia Film Office, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Lehigh Valley Historical Society.  Interested students with a minimum 2.8 GPA who can offer 14 or more 8 hours days, typically during summer sessions, should contact the History Department Internship Coordinator regarding the application process and registration for AMS 415 or HIS 460.

Department Specifics: The Department of Languages and Cultures offers a three, six, nine or twelve credit-hour internship to junior or senior majors and minors in languages or linguistics and to graduate students in French and Spanish who wish to enhance their study of a world language in aspects such as language, culture, and linguistics with an educational experience directly in the workplace, either in the United States or abroad. Students must have a minimum 75 credits, 2.75 GPA, 3.0 language GPA, and work a minimum of 10 hours per week for a 3 month period (120 hour) to receive 3 credits. Opportunities are vast and have included: Yves Rocher, French cosmetics firm in Exton, US Airways, Lufthansa Air, the World Bank, IBM, and local companies working with foreign clients.

Department Specifics: The Department of Mathematics has several concentrations that encourage an internship, which will allow students to work with a local company or organization. This hands-on opportunity allows students to see mathematics education at work, in applied real-life situations. Department Specifics: One of the unique features of the Pharmaceutical Product Development program is the requirement of a full-time summer internship. Internships are considered to be full-time employment, thus, they are twelve weeks in length and the students are paid. Prior to becoming eligible for a summer internship all students must complete a full year of organic chemistry, courses in cell physiology, genetics, recombinant DNA methodology the introductory course, PPD 481, and specialized seminars in the internship selection process. A full spectrum of internships are available, including bench science projects in drug synthesis, drug design, and drug metabolism studies in animals. In addition, other internships are available in data analysis and statistics, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, epidemiology, and safety monitoring of drugs.

College of Business and Public Affairs

Internships are not required but are highly recommended. Studies have shown that students who complete internships acquire good job experience and obtain better jobs upon graduation. All departments within the CBPA offer internships, and more than 400 students per year participate with businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.

Department Specifics: The Department of Accounting encourages students to participate in internships. Through an internship, students connect classroom instructions with practice. Student majors in the Department of Accounting can be granted up to 6 credits toward their graduation requirements through an approved internship experience. Department Specifics: This is a field placement, not an internship program. The Department of Criminal Justice requires students to complete a capstone Practicum course. This is a comprehensive twelve-credit, twelve-week summer program during which students work full-time for one of 500 Department-approved criminal justice agencies. Students gain valuable full-time experience with federal, state and local criminal justice agencies, as well as private organizations. In addition to resume enhancement, students begin important networking in the field, make valuable connections, earn references and letters of recommendation from professionals in the field, and learn of job openings before they are publicized. This is an extraordinary opportunity for all students interested in a career in the field of criminal justice.

Department Specifics: The Geography and Planning Department offers programs that bridge the physical and social sciences, combing the theoretical with practical experience. Students gain knowledge that can be applied to societal and environmental problems and to future planning. Departmental programs prepare the student for the post-graduation job market as well as for advanced educational opportunities. The degree program has several tracks and options, including Planning, Environmental, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, and Elective Social Studies Education. Many Geography & Planning students benefit from an internship experience during their junior or senior year. Often these are available during the summer. Formal internships are for academic credit, and involve a faculty supervisor as well as an employer supervisor. The student receives professional experience, and in some cases may receive a wage or expense money.

Department Specifics: As part of their undergraduate curriculum, students have the opportunity to gain internship experience for academic credit. The internship program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to connect classroom concepts with hands-on managerial experience. About 25% of Management majors take advantage of the internship option, and many receive job offers from their internship employers as a result of the experience. In order to do so, a student must be accepted into the Management Department with a GPA of 2.8 or higher and be a junior or senior student who has secured an internship at a company that will provide managerial or professional skills. Department Specifics: The Dr. Edwin Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center (ELC), a center of the College of Business and Public Affairs at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, serves as a catalyst for regional economic development by promoting entrepreneurship at West Chester University, in Chester County, and throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Center matches startups and small businesses seeking the assistance of a junior or senior level West Chester University student intern. Funding for the Cottrell ELC internships comes from a grant from the PA State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

The ELC Internship Program pays interns to work in qualified PA based small and startup businesses. The ELC Internship Program will pay a maximum of 180 hours of work at $15/hour for a total of $2700. Students must enroll in an internship course in the subject area related to the focus of the internship to qualify for the ELC funded internship. To determine the appropriate internship course, contact the academic department related to the focus of the internship and inquire of the professor of that course to learn how to register for the course.

Department Specifics: Internships in marketing are designed to provide a substantive work experience in the business world, as a means of enhancing a student’s educational experience. The overwhelming majority of interns are paid for their work. The hourly rate ranges from $9.00 to $15.00, with the majority of positions in the $10.00 to $12.00 range. Organizations typically offering marketing internships to WCU students represent more than 20 industries, including: consumer products marketing, marketing research agencies, pharmaceutical marketing/marketing research, software services marketing/marketing research, financial services marketing, sales training, and advertising. Students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher and have completed MKT 325: Marketing Management with a grade of C or better. Additional requirements vary by position and are subject to the approval of the Marketing Internship Coordinator, Marketing Department Chair, and the Dean of the School of Business and Public Affairs.

Department Specifics: The Department of Political Science offers students the opportunity for experiences outside the regular classroom environment through field placement learning in organizational settings. Internships are intended for highly qualified students who meet the following criteria: 1) a major or minor in one of the programs of the Department of Political Science; 2) class status of junior or senior; 3) overall G.P.A. of at least 2.5; 4) proper completion of the application process; 5) agree to all conditions set forth in the internship contract. Department Specifics: This is a field placement, not an internship program. Undergraduate (BSW) field practicum are a significant part of your preparation for professional social work practice. During the spring semester, junior level students complete 16 hours per week of field practicum experience. Senior level students complete 16 hours per week of field practicum experience during the fall and spring semesters. The field practicum is designed to help students learn to bridge classroom theory with social work practice. In the field practicum, students are provided opportunities to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, values and skills necessary to become competent beginning level generalist social workers.

Department Specifics: This is a field placement, not an internship program. Graduate (MSW) program field practicum focuses on integration of classroom/academic content with social work practice experiences to develop professional social work competencies. A total of four semesters of practicum experience is required, one academic year (two semesters) in each of two field practice placements. First year MSW studentscomplete16 hours per week and second year, 20 hours per week. MSW students must work with the Director of Field Practicum to identify and finalize the field placements/internships in this program.

Department Specifics: As a capstone experience, students in the Environmental Health program complete a semester long internship with industry, government, or non-profit organizations at the completion of their course work. The internship provides environmental health students with a unique chance to gain practical, hands-on professional experience and prepares them for the job market. Some of the organizations which have sponsored interns include: Dupont Environmental Remediation Services, Inc., Sun Marketing and Refining Co., Chester County Conservation District, The Brandywine Conservancy, The Brandywine Valley Association, PECO, PA Department of Environmental Protection, US Environmental Protection Agency , US Geological Survey, and many others. Before the internship may begin, the student, internship supervisor, and faculty advisor must agree, in writing, to the terms and conditions of the position.

Department Specifics: The Health Department’s program in Respiratory Care prepares students to enter the healthcare work force as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. The program enlists the assistance of twelve clinical sites to complete the educational process and as part of the clinical experience. Department Specifics: Students in the BSN program have a wide variety of clinical experiences including acute care, community health, day care centers, schools, retirement centers, nursing homes, and a veterans hospital. Individualized instruction is provided in the clinical setting with a 1:10 faculty/student ratio. A learning laboratory is available on campus to allow students to practice their psychomotor skills prior to actual contact with clients. BSN graduates have obtained jobs in many settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, community agencies, physicians’ offices, etc. Most BSN graduates continue on with graduate study after a few years of experience as a professional nurse.

Department Specifics: The Department of Art at West Chester University has established an organized and structured program integrating the visual arts and academic disciplines. Those students interested in a career in Graphic Design who are either juniors or seniors in the major may register for the ART 450 Graphic Design Internship for 3 credits. This course provides experience in studio, agency, or company-involved design responsibilities and procedures to broaden the student's understanding of the profession through job experience. Departmental permission is required for registration.

Department Specifics: The Department of Theatre and Dance at West Chester University is dedicated to the educational development of its students, preparing them to meet the challenges of our contemporary world. To achieve this goal, the department supports student experience in hands-on internships. Students interested in an internship must be interviewed and obtain department permission to be placed in THA 150 Summer Theatre Workshop for 3 credits. This course is a combination of classroom instruction and applied production techniques for student interns working with the department’s Summer Theatre program and is available to first-year/sophomore-level students and to qualified high school seniors.
