Where do I go to get help about WCU Wireless Zone?

Is the entire campus wireless?

No, but wireless network is available in many buildings and areas.

Who can use the wireless network?

All WCU students, faculty and staff may connect to the network.

What is the range of a wireless access point?

Typically, the range (or the area surrounding an access point where wireless devices can connect) is anywhere from 100 feet (indoors) to 350 feet (outdoors). In many cases, wireless connectivity extends beyond the areas listed above (such as in common outdoor areas) depending upon your hardware and configuration.

How fast is the wireless network?

The wireless network supports speeds up to 54Mbps. Slower speeds may be experienced, depending upon how many users are attached to one access point, and how far from the access point you are.

How much does it cost the end user [me]?

There is no cost to “use” the wireless network. A wireless network adapter will be needed in order to connect. Most modern laptops have these built in.

What type of wireless card do I need to get connected?

Any IEEE 802.11b/g (also called Wi-Fi) wireless adapter should work.

What are WEP and SSID?

WEP is not being used. The SSID for your computer should be WCU_101.

Can I use my email, D2L, AOL, etc., using a WCU Wireless Zone?

Yes, connecting to the wireless network is the same as plugging into the wired one.

Will my Apple Airport card work?

Yes.
