How do I Log in to the network?

To log onto the network hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys on your keyboard. Then type your username, Example: jsmith@wcupa.edu, and your password.


How do I lock my computer in Windows XP?

Hold down the windows key (located between the control and alt key on the keyboard) and the L key to lock your computer or hold down the control, alt, delete keys then the windows security box will appear and click on Lock Computer.

To unlock it, hold down control, alt, delete and type in your password then press ok.  The person that locked it is the only one who can unlock it.


How do I change my network password?

  1. Go to webmail.wcupa.edu
  2. Click Initialize/Change password and follow the on-screen directions

Where do I save my files?

Save your files in C:\mydocuments.  This way you are the only person who can view these documents.  If you need  to give others access to your folders there is a folder called "shared" under your C:\ drive that you can share.


How do I share a folder?

In Windows XP, any file or folder that you want to share with another person should be placed within the shared folder located on the C drive.  (C:\shared)

  1. Right click on the folder that is to be shared.
  2. Select Sharing and Security.
  3. Then select the Sharing tab in the property box and click on "Share this folder" radio button.

  1. Always select Maximum allowed for user limit.
  2. To set permissions for users who access this folder over the network, click the Permissions icon. The following window appears:

  1. Click on the Add button, then the Select Users, Computers, or Groups screen appears:

  1. Type the domain (wcupanet) then the\ key, then the person's user name, at the end it should look like: wcupanet\ejohnson.
  2. Click "OK" through the next three screens.

I liked the old look of windows better, can I switch it back?

Sure can, right click your desktop and click properties, then click the advanced tab, on the windows and buttons drop down select windows classic, and then click ok.


How do I change my screensaver?

A screen saver is a program that displays moving graphics or words on your screen when you are not working.  To choose a screen saver, select Display in the Control Panel then choose the Screen Saver Tab.  This is the screen that will appear:

I liked the old look of windows better, can I switch it back?

Sure can, right click your desktop and click properties, then click the advanced tab, on the windows and buttons drop down select windows classic, and then click ok.


How do I change my desktop wallpaper?

To change your desktop, click on the Start Menu, and then the Control Panel, select Display, and then click on the desktop tab.  There are many choices to choose from  Highlight the one you prefer, then click apply, and then click ok.  You can also create your own by clicking on the Browse button and locate a picture that you have saved then click apply, then click ok.

How do I create a desktop shortcut?

  1. Click Start, All Programs
  2. Locate the program.
  3. Right-Click Send to from the drop-down menu, and then click Desktop (create shortcut) on the submenu that appears.

How do I pin and unpin items from the start menu?

  1. Click Start, and then click All Programs.
  2. Right-click on the program you want to Pin, and click Pin to Start menu.

  1. Click Start, and then Right-click on the program you want to remove, select unpin from start menu.

How do I turn the taskbar option on or off?

To prevent the taskbar from becoming cluttered when multiple programs are open and multiple documents are open within the programs, the taskbar button grouping feature combines documents from each application into one button that is identified by the application name.

The feature is on by default; however, you won’t notice it until you have several documents open in the same program.  When Windows XP combines the documents into a single taskbar button, it places a triangle on the right side of the button to indicate that the grouping feature is active.
