HSA has had quite an eventful spring semester thus far!
On Saturday, February 20th, Honors held its second interview session for the incoming first year class. We interviewed nearly 40 candidates, and the day went extremely well. Thanks to all who helped prepare for the event and who volunteered on the day of the interviews.
In addition, this week, HSA held its February bowling social. Everyone had a great time and bowled pretty well, too! Stay tuned for information about our annual semi-formal which will be held on April 17th in the Sykes Ballrooms.
In other Honors news, we will be departing for South Africa on March 5th. In addition to volunteering at Cecil Begbie’s soup kitchen and at Sparrow Village, we will be interviewing South Africans who were involved in the fight against Apartheid. Everyone is so excited, and we look forward to sharing our stories with you upon our return.
Nathan Kutz, Cass Lowry, Stacey Snyder, Steve Savage and Christina Durbin
President
Stacey Snyder (HCX) is a junior from Bensalem, PA majoring in Secondary English Education. In addition to her involvement with the Honors Student Association, Stacey volunteers at Barclay Friends Nursing Home through WCU's Traveling Across Generations program. Stacey is also actively involved in Hillel, the Jewish Student Union. She is currently a member of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society and plays intramural basketball. Prior to this year, Stacey served one semester as HSA Secretary and two semesters as HSA Social Chair. She also traveled with the Honors College to South Africa in 2008, and it was such an eye-opening experience that she will be returning again in 2010. Stacey is excited to serve as the Honors Student Association president and looks forward to seeing a growth in membership and in service and leadership opportunities for members.
First Vice President
Steve Savage (HC VIII) is a fourth year Finance Major/Accounting Minor. Steve has actively served on different committees of the Honors Student Association since coming to West Chester in the fall of 2006, and has been both Fund Raising and Social Chair at different points of his college career. Outside of his work with the Honors Student Association, Steve volunteers at a local senior home, teaching the residents there how to play poker. Steve has traveled to Alabama twice with Honors Professor John Helion to help build homes damaged by hurricane Katrina and is excited to return again in January. In his free time, Steve plays the bass guitar in a rock band called Faster Than Fate. One of Steve's interests is film making, and he has used this skill numerous time to develop videos projects for fellow students, professors, and even the Honors College. He currently works at the Chester County Community Foundation as a business and public relations intern, using both his skill in the financial world as well as his interest in film marketing to contribute to the organization.
Second Vice President
Cass Lowry (HPIX) is a Junior from Phoenixville, PA majoring in Elementary Education, with a minor in Philosophy. This is Cass's second year as 2nd Vice President and the third year that he has been actively involved in HSA. In addition to HSA, Cass is the Vice President of WCU's Forensics Team and is a certified LARC tutor. Cass had the extreme fortune to travel with Honors to South Africa in 2008 and to study in Belgium and France this past summer through the Honors System of PASSHE. Combining all of his experiences, Cass is excited to make a difference this year on the WCU campus and in the lives of HSA's wonderful members.
Treasurer
Nathan Kutz (HSCP) is a 4th-year undergraduate from Fleetwood, PA majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Criminal Justice, Ethnic Studies, Web-Technology, and Information Technology. After transferring from Penn State, Nathan became an active member of HSA. In 2008, he served on the Public Relations committee as a writer for the newsletter. Then, during the spring semester of 2009, Nathan became the Historian of HSA. Besides Honors, Nathan is the President of Lambda Pi Eta, the Communication Studies Honor Society. He is involved with Phi Sigma Pi Fraternity, Criminal Justice Association, and Pre-Law Society. Nathan is a Leadership Consultant for the University Office of Student Leadership and Involvement where he updates the student organizations umbrella website. Nathan hopes to reference his wide range of studies and involvement activities as he applies to study computer crime in law school. His goal for Honors Student Association is to increase the organization's budget to put it in a financial bracket alongside other similarly sized student groups.
Secretary
Christina Durbin (HCX) is a sophomore from Upper Darby, PA majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. In addition to being the Secretary of the Honors Student Association, Christina is an Academic Development tutor of Public Speaking at the Learning Assistance & Resource Center on campus. In the past, Christina was a member of the West Chester Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band in the Color Guard and served on the Games & Activities Committee for Aid to South Africa. She was also a founding member of the WCU chapter of National Students for Ailing Mothers and Fathers. She participates in many community service events, such as Relay For Life, and was a member of an Honors Intramural Volleyball team. This is the first leadership position Christina has held within HSA, however, she wants to continue serving HSA in anyway that she can to help make such a meaningful organization flourish.
Immediate Past President
Dan Moran (HPVII) is a senior from Levittown, PA majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in Actuarial Science. In addition to his involvement with the Honors Student Association, Dan is a member of the Alchemist's Club, Pi Mu Epsilon, Darlington Biological Society, and the Anderson Math Club. He has served in the past as Fundraising Chair for HSA, Treasurer for Aid to South Africa, and he traveled with the Honors College to South Africa in 2006 and 2008 - two trips which he said helped shape him to be who he is today. Dan is ready to undertake his final year of undergraduate studies and hopes to see the Honors Student Association bring in more people from outside of its current core group and to spread its involvement even outside of the campus.
