The Piano Institute offers a workshop of intensive study comprising master classes and private lessons, with emphasis on technique, interpretation, and repertoire. All participants have daily access to air conditioned private practice facilities equipped with grand pianos and have opportunities for weekly individual conferences. Guest lectures by renowned personalities in the contemporary music world are a special feature. Public performance opportunities are offered to all students who wish to participate.

Summer Camps
Summer High School Music Camp
June 28 - July 2, 2009
West Chester University's 48th Annual High School Summer Music Camp will take place from Sunday, June 28, 2009 through Thursday, July 2, 2009. The camp offers resident and commuter options for students entering grades 9 through 12. Students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of large and small ensembles, including wind ensemble, string orchestra, chorus, jazz band, brass ensemble and percussion ensemble, among others. Each ensemble performs at the end of the week, with all concerts open to family and friends. Auditions for an evening solo recital are held at the start of camp.
Our faculty consists primarily of West Chester University professors, all of whom are active performing artists in the Philadelphia region. Each student receives three private lessons throughout the week on their primary instrument or voice. Students will also participate in a theory/ear training course and audition preparation classes.
Camp activities include opportunities for swimming, volleyball and other organized evening activities.
Tuition and camper options:
- Resident: $575 (includes full camp curriculum, room and board)
- Resident early registration discount: $550 (if received before June 1)
- Commuter: $535 (includes full camp curriculum, weekday lunches and dinners)
- Resident early registration discount: $510 (if received before June 1)

Summer Elementary and Middle School Music Camps
June 22 - 26, 2009 (9am to 12pm)
Program Highlights:
- Large-ensemble and small-ensemble performance opportunities including concert band, string orchestra, flute choir, clarinet ensemble, saxophone ensemble, brass ensemble and percussion ensemble.
- Instruction from some of the region’s finest educators and performers.
- Daily faculty mini-recitals which allow your students to see professional musicians in an intimate and engaging setting.
- A showcase concert at the end of the week for friends and family featuring all ensembles
Cost: $210.00 per student (register by May 1, 2009 for only $195.00)

Summer Jazz Workshop
July 12 - 17 , 2009
Students will explore the pedagogy of jazz improvisation, arranging, orchestration, jazz history and performance techniques. Visiting artists as well as the WCU faculty will perform and conduct mastercalsses on various subjects. All participants will need to have a knowledge of scales, be able to read music, transpose and be proficient on an instrument. Participants will be grouped with peers.

Summer Leadership and Marching Band Camp
July 28 - July 31 , 2009
Lead by nationall acclaimed experts, the Marching Band track will teach the fundamentals and principles to create an effective and successful performance. This is an opportunity to experience a group dynamic where everyone is committed to excellence and a program where the staff will provide detailed instruction working with contemporary music and drill.
The Director and Staff sessions offered include: Rehearsal techniques, organization and administration, leadership, drill writing, conducting, literature, band pedagogy, and technology.
