Abroad with Theatre and Dance

The summer is a time for taking trips and the Department of Theatre and Dance at West Chester University is no different. Several faculty and students are spending their time abroad this summer throughout Europe.

Associate Professor Gretchen Studlien-Webb, coordinator of the dance minor program, is traveling to Poland this summer with seventeen dance students and members of the University Dance Company. As invited guest performers of the Ladek Zdroj International Dance Festival, the students will be performing in two gala dance concerts in addition to taking master classes from dance artists around the world. Choreographic works by WCU dance faculty Liz Staruch, Studlien-Webb, and Maria Urrutia will be presented along with select student choreography. Studlien-Webb will also be teaching master classes in American contemporary dance and dancer conditioning pulling from the languages of yoga, Pilates, and strength training.

Interdisciplinary artist and assistant professor Maria Urrutia presented scholarship during the 2013 Society of Dance History Scholars International Conference in Trondheim, Norway in June. In this research, Professor Urrutia investigates the ideas surrounding the migratory body and the relationship it shares with Cuban rumba in the diaspora.

Theatre major Kathryn (Katie) Stahl is attending the British American Drama Academy's Midsummer in Oxford program at Magdalen College. The Midsummer in Oxford (MIO) program is designed for serious acting students at all levels over the age of eighteen and concentrates on classical acting with an emphasis on Shakespeare.  Students work and live alongside the faculty in Magdalen College, Oxford, located about an hour from both Stratford-upon-Avon and London. The faculty consists of both British and American leading theatre practitioners and is run in association with Yale School of Drama and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
