Pucallpa Region
Site: Pucallpa, Ucayali Province The city of Pucallpa is located in central Peru. Because there is a fairly well-developed network of roads, the city is surrounded by numerous plantations. Two important tributaries of the Amazon are in this region - the Rio Pisqui and the Rio Ucayali. There are two main indigenous groups living on these rivers - the Shipibo and the Pisqui. The Amigos programs work closely with these indigenous groups. They harvest natural products from the forest, such as camu camu, used by the Amazon Herb Company - a major sponsor of the Amigos programs in this region.
General Description of Project: Classroom Improvement Many of the twenty-one Amigos schools in this region are in extremely remote areas, some as far as a three day journey by boat. Teachers and students in this region have few resources and access to town is difficult. For this reason, these schools receive an annual distribution of schools supplies for the teachers and each child. Children receive a packet of supplies that includes books, notebooks, pens and pencils and games. Teacher's Academy The teachers are brought together twice a year for experiential workshops on curriculum development and delivery, focused on environmental education. The workshops are run by ACEER staff in partnership with the indigenous teacher training colleges. Many of the schools teach both Spanish and the local dialect and teachers are drawn from the local community, with support of local elders.
