Counseling Services

Students present with a variety of concerns, so different modalities are offered to best meet the needs of the individual. Any of the following approaches may be implemented to address a student's concerns:

  • Triage: Triage is the first point of contact for students interested in mental health services. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come/first served basis. During this appointment, the student will meet with a counselor for a brief assessment and discuss options moving forward for counseling. Triage hours are Monday through Friday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Individual psychological counseling consists of a one-to-one experience with the focus on resolving personal or interpersonal conflicts. The Counseling Center operates on a short-term basis, so students typically receive no more than one semester’s worth of individual work. Students who have already received services, can always return to the Counseling Center for re-assessment for services.
  • Group counseling consists of a small number of students (6-8) who meet weekly with a leader or co-leaders. Groups are especially helpful for students who wish to share their concerns with peers and enhance their social skills in a therapeutic setting.
  • Psychiatric services are provided on a limited basis. Students in need of a psychiatric assessment or medication must be in treatment with a Counseling Center therapist. There is a nominal fee for psychiatric services.
  • Consultation services are provided to individuals who seek guidance, direction, or education. For example, faculty members who are concerned about the well-being of a student may consult on the best way to approach a student in distress.
  • Clinical Case Manager is available by appointment only in the Counseling Center.  They work to maintain a network of providers in the community and will help students get connected with a mental health provider off-campus.  They also maintain a Referral Guide to provide direction to individuals who need longer-term, mental health services and can assist with creating those connections.
  • Outreach presentations are given, upon request, by counselors throughout the year for students in residence halls, classes, student organizations, and special interest groups.
