One student’s story of violence at the hands of a loved one. This was written this semester by a current WCU student. When I first attended a performance of The Vagina Monologues at West Chester University, the show left a lasting impression on me. I found the monologues to be alternately comical or devastating, and in both cases, amazing. The next time I attended The Vagina Monologues, I was affected even more deeply. Less than two years ago, I was raped by a man whom I believed loved and respected me. Seeing the Monologues through the eyes of a survivor of sexual violence allowed me to see an entirely new meaning in the show. I recall wiping away tears during a monologue about such violence and thinking, “I’m not alone; someone else understands this!” This year, I’ve decided to become involved with the production. It is a way for me to break the silence about my own experience and that of so many other women who are unable to talk about the violence in their lives. It is also a way for me to heal from the pain that the rape caused. Speaking out in this way is empowering. I also hope that others will be affected by The Vagina Monologues as I was, either as a survivor themselves or as a supporter. It has been, and will continue to be, a worthwhile and amazing experience.
