January Orientation is required for all incoming First-Year students and all students transferring with 59 credits or less.  Students transferring with 60 credits or more are welcome to attend Orientation, but it is not required for them.  If you are considered a non-traditional student (25 years of age or older) or if you are only attending WCU part-time, you are not required to attend Orientation, but you are welcome to participate in the Orientation program.

Important Note for both First-Year and Transfer Students:

January’s Orientation does not include academic advising and scheduling.

In your acceptance packet you received instructions on scheduling classes and a listing of academic departments and phone numbers. It is important that you contact your major department in a timely manner to arrange an advising appointment and to finalize your course scheduling.

TRANSFER STUDENTS: Please take the credit evaluation you will receive from the Office of the Registrar and a copy of your class schedule, if currently enrolled, to the advising appointment.


Classes begin on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 and all University offices will be closed from Friday, December 25th - Friday, January 1st.



Orientation for First-Year and Transfer Students

Participation in Orientation is MANDATORY for all First-Year Students and all students transferring with 59 credits or less. Students transferring with 60 credits or more are welcome to attend Orientation, but it is not required for them.


January Orientation is a one-day program which will take place on Sunday, January 17, 2010.

The program on Sunday, January 17th, will be from 12:15 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Parents are welcome to attend the Orientation program on Sunday, January 17th. The parent session will run from 12:15 p.m.-5:15 p.m.


 

Students living on-campus can check out the Office of Residence Life and Housing Services web page for more details about when they can move into their Residence Hall room or apartment.


Program Cost and Registration

  • There is a $68 fee for the Orientation Program, which covers the cost of meals, materials, programs, and your ID card (Ram E-card).  All students must register and pay for the Orientation program before they arrive.

  • To Register:  please complete the Orientation Registration form online (see above links) or complete the paper registration form that was mailed to you and mail it back in the envelope addressed to the Office of the Bursar.

  • To Pay:  please mail your check or money order for $68, made payable to WCU Orientation Program, in the Office of the Bursar envelope that was mailed to you.  You may also pay the $68 fee over the phone with a credit card.  The Bursar's Office will be able to help you with the fee, if you choose to pay over the phone.  You can reach them at 610-436-2552 between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. each week day.  They accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

           If you need to work out a payment plan for the Orientation fee, please contact the Office of New Student Programs at 610-436-3305.

  • Please submit your registration and payment so that it is received no later than Monday, January 11, 2010.


What can you do prior to the Orientation Program on Sunday, January 17th at 12:15 p.m.?

  • If you will be living in a residence hall for the spring semester, you will need to check-in to your hall prior to the Orientation program on Sunday.  The halls will be open for check-in beginning at 9 a.m.
  • Visit the Bookstore on the ground level of Sykes Student Union.  It will be open at 10 a.m.
  • Purchase a parking permit, if eligible, at the Parking Office in the People's Building - open 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Please note that, if you are eligible to purchase a parking permit, you may register online prior to coming on campus to speed up their process (www.wcupa.edu/dps/Parking Services).  Also, in order for a resident student to have a car on-campus, you must have at least 30 credits. 
  • Have lunch on-campus or in the West Chester area.  The Lawrence Dining Hall will be open at 10 a.m.  We have included a meal ticket for you to use for lunch in the Dining Hall.  Parents and guests can pay at the door. 


Directions and Parking

Please park behind Sykes Student Union where the Orientation Program will take place.
  • If you are coming from the North (Route 100/High Street), make a right at the light onto Rosedale Avenue. Continue by following the below directions from West Rosedale Avenue.

  • If you are coming from the South (Route 202/High Street), make a left at the light onto Rosedale Avenue. Continue by following the below directions from West Rosedale Avenue.

  • Heading West on Rosedale Avenue: Just before the first stop sign, turn left onto S. Church Street. Make a right at the next stop sign into Sykes Student Union Parking Lot K. You may park in any space that is not designated as Handicapped or Faculty/Staff. If you miss the turn onto S. Church Street, continue on Rosedale Avenue (you will pass Sykes on your left) and turn left onto Roslyn Street (about one block before the traffic light). Make the next left into Sykes Student Union Parking Lot K.
