Janet Sackey

Janet Sackey My name is Janet Luz Sackey - Phipps and I was once told by my mentor from high school that "education is the great equalizer" which is one of the reasons I so fervently believed in education and school. I am currently a Junior studying History and International Business with aspirations to be either in Fashion, Public Service and become a Entrepreneur. I say all these things because nothing in life is certain and there are no limits thus I aim for the sky! As a First Year and Second Year I was involved in everything such as Sisters United and the Student Government Association. Sisters United is a multicultural woman organization on campus whose purpose is to give woman of all races a place to advocate, learn and grow as a individual and professional. Sisters United invites guest speakers and holds substantial programs such as Voting 101, Woman in the Workplace and Homophobia in the Multicultural Community to name a few. But what I have learned is college isn't a place for comfort, challenge yourself join clubs and organizations that will help you with your major, networking and meeting influential people in academia, STEP OUT OF YOURSELF! West Chester University has over hundred organizations, but don't let that limit you, make an organization if you don't find one of your liking, or approach organizations with comments to make them better, College is all about what YOU make it, so leave a LEGACY. What distinguishes you from the person sitting next to you in class, roommate or friend in the professional world is your legacy and the confidence to be GREAT. I learned that confidence is the key is everything in life I learned that from my parents, both immigrants, mother from Dominican Republic and father from Ghana. The reason why I wanted to be a mentor for the OMA is so I can lend an ear, shoulder, words of wisdom and motivate to people.
