Contraception
Contraceptive Options
pills - patch - vaginal ring- injection - condoms
The Student Health and Wellness Center carries a variety of
contraceptives. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) may be prescribed by one of
the nurse practitioners. Birth control pills are available to students at a
discounted price. If you prefer a brand that we do not carry or if you
have a prescription plan that you prefer to use, we can write a
prescription so you may pick up your preferred pills at a pharmacy.
We also offer education for
other types of
hormonal contraception such as the contraceptive patch, vaginal ring, and injectable
contraception (Depo Provera). We do not prescribe the patch or Depo
shots, but we can administer shots prescribed by other providers.
Free condoms are also available at the Wellness Center.

I want to start using hormonal contraception (pills, patch,
vaginal ring or injection)
If you have never had an pelvic exam or it has been over one
year since you have had one, then you should call the Student Health
Center to schedule an appointment for the exam. The nurse practitioner
will determine through your exam and medical history if you are a
candidate for hormonal contraception. If there are no
contraindications, then the nurse practitioner will instruct you on
the proper use and possible side effects.

I've had an annual exam within the past year and would like to purchase oral contraceptives.
If you have had a pelvic exam within the past year at another
location and would like to get your pills from the Student Health
Center, then you should call your doctor's office and ask them to fax
your medical history, exam, and last Pap smear record to us at
610-436-3148. If the office requires a release form in order to have
the information faxed, then the Student Health Center has one available.
Once this information is received you may set up a brief appointment
with one of our Women's Health Nurse Practitioners. They will review
your history, ask you some questions to make sure there are no
contraindications, and if appropriate, prescribe the contraceptive for
you.
