FOOD OF THE WEEK: ONIONS                                        Despite the fact that they make you cry, onions are really good for you. Several studies have shown that consumption of onions demonstrated protective effects against several cancers such as tomach, prostate, and esophageal. There are also a couple of studies that showed promise in bone ealth from onion consumption. Also, onions have several antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and antiviral. Onions are a great source of the anti-inflammatory compound quercetin, which has antiallergic properties. Quercetin is even used by some nutritionists in treating allergies with natural substances. All these benefits for just a few tears? I’d say that’s worth it. Interestingly, the type of onion will affect the amount of health-promoting chemicals that it contains. The strongest tasting onions have the most superior health benefits. (current issue of Nutrition News)
