Since the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services provides services for a wide range of concerns, each student's experience will be tailored to his or her request. Students may want to clarify their vocational or educational choices, improve their interpersonal skills, or resolve personal conflicts. Their choice of approach could include one or more of the following counseling center services:
Individual Counseling for
Personal Problem Solving
Personal counseling consists of a
one-to-one counseling experience where the focus is upon resolving personal conflicts,
conflicts with others and upon improving your expertise at making personally meaningful
choices. It may also help some people avoid decisions which restrict their personal growth
and undermine their well being.
Individual Vocational
Counseling
Vocational counseling consists of a one-to-one counseling experience that focuses upon
your choice of major and vocation. Vocational choice is most solid when it is the
outgrowth of understanding yourself. Such understanding requires time and thought and
involves identifying your own style, values, interests and abilities. Psychological
testing as well as discussion often enhances self-understanding.
Group Counseling
Group counseling consists of a small group of peers who meet with one or more counselors
to discuss common concerns and develop more effective coping strategies. Special interest
groups have focused on assertive communication, relationship skills, issues with eating,
grief and loss, test taking strategies. Other special topic groups can be provided as
needed. For groups currently offered Click Here.
Crisis Intervention
The Counseling Center maintains a 24 hour, 7 day/week on call
service for West Chester University students when classes are in
session. After hours, this service may be accessed by contacting
the Campus Police, Residence Life Directors, the Health Center
and/or the Assistant Dean of Students; who will then contact the
counselor on call. During daytime office hours students in crisis may
call the Counseling Center at 436-2301 or walk in for an
appointment.
Psychiatric Services Effective fall 2007, there will be an eight dollar ($8.00) charge for every visit
with a psychiatrist. There will also be a penalty fee of ten dollars ($10.00) for
students who do not show up for a scheduled appointment.
To avoid the penalty,
a scheduled appointment will need to be canceled with 24 hours notice. All fees
may be paid by Ram Bucks or with a personal check. We are unable to accept cash or
credit cards. Unpaid fees will result in a "hold" on a student's account.

The Counseling Center has two part-time consulting psychiatrists
available to assist in evaluations and follow-up where medication
may be necessary as an adjunct to counseling. This service is
available to students who are in an on-going counseling
relationship with a department psychologist, intern, or practicum student
and may not be accessed independently.
Counseling Center psychologists are available to consult with
staff, faculty and other members of the University
community. Assistance can be provided with crises, program
planning, group and interpersonal communications as well as with
referrals to other agencies.
Counseling Center psycholgists and psychological trainees often
present workshops or educational programs dealing with a variety
of interests and concerns. Topics have included coping with
stress, communicating more effectively, dealing with differences,
eating disorders, test-taking strategies.
The Student Health and Wellness Center's
alcohol awareness page describes programs and
information sources concerning consequences of
alcohol use as well as strategies for avoiding dangerous
situations. This page includes information about Alcoholics
Anonymous, and about "E-chug," a web-based alcohol check-up,
which provides personalized information about alcohol use.
A. Michael Blanche, our drug-and-alcohol counselor,
can discuss concerns about use or abuse of alcohol or other
substances. He can provide brief personal screenings, comprehensive evaluations
and ongoing supportive counseling for students struggling to become
sober.
