Geology and Astronomy

• M.A. Geoscience

• All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
  1. Hold an undergraduate degree (not necessarily in Geology) from an accredited institution.
  2. An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater. If the GPA is less than 2.8, students may be admitted provisionally with one of these standardized tests and scores: GRE (more than 1000), MAT (greater than the 50th percentile), or Praxis PPST (greater than the Pennsylvania Department of Education Minimum).
  3. Complete of the following prerequisites: ESS 101 Introduction to Geology; CHE and CRL 103 General Chemistry I and lab; PHY 130 General Physics; MAT 105 College Algebra; and MAT 121 Statistics I.
  4. Permission of the Graduate Review Committee
• Complete the online application and submit academic transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent.

• The M.A. Geoscience degree is designed for professional development of geologists and precollege teachers. Courses are offered evenings, weekends, and summer to accommodate working professionals.
• The M.A. Geoscience degree requires 36 graduate credits. All students must take ESS 523 Field Geology, ESS 536 Environmental Geology, ESS 596 Earth Systems Science, and a 1-credit Geoscience Seminar. Students may then choose either the Earth Science Track (ESS 530 Oceanography and ESS 570 Meteorology) or the Geology Track (ESS 521 Geometrics and ESS 539 Hydrogeology).
• All students must complete and defend a final project at the end of the program, such as a unit plan, a professional paper, or a scientific paper to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
• Students may take up to 6 graduate credits (2 courses) without enrolling in the program. These classes will count towards graduation once a student is admitted.
