BEST Club Overview
Bringing Elders and Students Together
Greetings and welcome to the BEST club of West Chester University's Undergraduate Social Work Department. We would like to invite you to participate in this Club in order to help our students become social workers. We would appreciate volunteers like you to assist our students in the growth of their academic experiences. Please feel free to look around the website and to contact us with any questions or inquires at 610-436-2527.
Who:
|
Anyone over age 55. |
Experience:
|
None required, just a long life. |
Where:
|
Your home, or a convenient location of your choice. |
When:
|
3 Visits, approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hours each during October/November, or February/March. |
| What: |
A student enrolled in a Social Work Practices course at WCU will contact
you to set up 3 interviews with you. By sharing your story during the
interviews, you will be helping the student become comfortable talking to
an older adult, develop his or her interviewing and assessment skills, and
gain a different perspective.
|
| What Else: |
During the interviews the student will be preparing a Resource Book
especially for you, their senior partner. This will include photos and
memories of major events in your life, in order to create a timeline of your
life. The timeline will provide the students with a sense of how a person
moves through life stages. The students may also work with you to
develop a timeline of your significant events. Your Resource Book, which
is yours to keep, will be presented at an Appreciation Reception at the
end of the semester, bringing all the volunteers and students together.
|
| That's All?: |
Finally, you will be asked to provide some feedback to WCU which will be
used to enhance the classroom experience for these and future students.
We encourage you to actively participate during the interviews in order for
students to have an adequate amount of information to produce a creative
resource book.
