Dr. Tia Malkin-Fontecchio
Assistant Professor

Brief Biography:

Tia Malkin-Fontecchio is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at West Chester University. Before coming to WCU she was an Assistant Professor at Lebanon Valley College from 2002 to 2006. Dr. Malkin-Fontecchio received her BA degree in Latin American Studies and Latin American Literature from the University of California at Berkeley in 1994. She received her MA and PhD degrees in Latin American History from Brown University in 1996 and 2003 respectively. As an undergraduate she spent a semester living in Rio de Janeiro and as Fulbright Fellow she conducted research in the Brazilian Northeast.

Teaching Interests:

Dr. Malkin-Fontecchio teaches upper-division and graduate courses in Colonial and Modern Latin American History, She is also a University Supervisor for the Secondary Education program. Her course offerings include Colonial Latin America, Modern Latin America, History of Brazil, US ­Latin American Relations, Varieties of History, History of Civilization II, Methods and Materials of Research in History, and Independent Latin America. She is currently developing a new graduate course on Colonial Latin America, as well as an undergraduate survey of Mexican history. Dr. Fontecchio currently serves as the advisor to the History Club.

Research Interests:

Dr. Malkin-Fontecchio's dissertation, Citizens or Workers: The Politics of Education in Northeast Brazil 1959-1964, centered on the connection between populism and popular education movements. Her current research focuses on the representation of race in contemporary Brazilian cinema. Her essay, The ŒNew Marginality: Representations of the Favela in Recent Brazilian Cinema was recently published in Performing Difference: Representations of the Other in Film and Theater.
