The Helen Tapper Ivins Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to an exemplary social studies certification student.
This scholarship was established in 1995 in the memory of Helen Tapper Ivins, who received her B.S. from West Chester State College in 1935, then worked as a social studies teacher at Ridley Park High School until 1942. During World War II, Ivins left her teaching position to accompany her husband during his military service. In 1946, Mrs. Ivins received M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania and joined the Social Studies faculty at West Chester. She continued her studies in history and social studies at Penn and the University of Delaware.
A popular and dedicated teacher, Mrs. Ivins inspired many of her students to become history teachers. She also enjoyed her service on one of the University's earliest scholarship committees. The Class of 1954 dedicated its yearbook, Serpentine, to Helen Tapper Ivins (and Emil Missikomer). Mrs. Ivins retired from West Chester University in 1974 and died nine years later.
