Peru Fulbright Study Abroad Program
In conjunction with ACEER and the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program, the Department of Languages and Cultures sponsored a month-long study program in Lima and the rain forest of Peru in July 2006 and 2007. Excursions during the study program also included a visit to Machu Pichu.
The 2006 program of study, July 5 – August 5, 2006, was entitled “Language and Culture Study in Lima, the Peruvian Amazon, and Rainforest for K-12 Teachers.”
Please see the link for the program announcement and itinerary for the 2007 program of study (sample student projects will be posted soon).
Please contact Dr. Jerry Williams, jwilliams2@wcupa.edu, for further information on the 2006 and 2007 Fulbright Groups Projects Abroad programs, and the proposed 2010 program.

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad
Summer 2007 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program for 12 Participants
Field Experience and Cultural Immersion for Intern and Practicing K-12 Teachers:
Peru’s Educational System Up Close
July 1 to July 30, 2007
Jerry M. Williams, Ph.D., Project Director Edmundo Morales, Ph.D., Co-Coordinator
Charles E. Grove, Ph.D., Co-Coordinator Marguerite Gould, ACEER
Student-teacher interns and practicing teachers visited and studied a number of public and private educational centers in Lima and in Andean mountain communities, including rural, village, urban and suburban schools. In addition they visited Inca archeological sites, including Machu Picchu and conducted hands-on field observations in ACEER-affiliated K-12 schools as part of its Los Amigos school partnerships. The month-long study abroad was designed to take advantage of educational facilities and sites present in Peru and in Amazon schools that are absent in the United States. The experience enabled participants to establish ties with Peruvian teachers in diverse educational settings, developing a post-project exchange of curriculum models for K-12 instruction, and establishing state-side a series of pedagogies for practical application that led to responsive curricula and improved language proficiency and cultural awareness. The structured collaborative setting of the field component required 4 to 5 days per week of hands-on experience in schools and programs where language education majors observed a variety of K-12 students learning within broad-range instructional environments and interacting with teachers, their students and administrators in an international context. Such interactions provided future and practicing teachers with a professional and methodological framework of comparison that represented a significant contribution to their ongoing professional development and success in the classroom back home.
Upon completion of the program participants compared and contrasted public and private educational programs visited in Peru; how U.S. and Peruvian educational programs address the needs of K-12 children; described in general terms Peruvian cultural and educational norms, their history and influence today, and identified instructional practices that could be adopted in the U.S. to provide higher quality programs. Participants became familiar with pedagogies that their K-12 counterparts employ to support the cognitive learning styles of their pupils, and understood how to use these pedagogies to transform their own language classrooms. The acquisition of new classroom practices improved the participants’ teaching, and—through post-program dissemination activities—they shared new curriculum models with other K-12 schools. Peru as the host county possesses cultural and historic advantages as one of the leading Latin American countries that still retains and honors its indigenous past and places a high value on eradicating illiteracy. Foreign language teachers, as deliverers of instruction, are more effective instructors when they have first-hand experience with the languages they teach. Participants are equipped to comprehend the complexities of a global society that crosses cultural and linguistic borders to approach the personal, socio-political, and professional challenges of this millennium. The preparation of superior language educators involves the simultaneous development of second language proficiency, linguistic, literary, and cultural content, and pedagogical skills and background. In light of this approach, the Fulbright program provides a balance of theoretical training and clinical / field observation, in which the process of becoming a critically reflective teacher is emphasized. K-12 educators must experience, appreciate, and cultivate the interconnectedness of content area knowledge with pedagogical knowledge. The Fulbright program is a natural progression of our university’s outreach opportunities for K-12 teachers.
The Fulbright-Hays project enables learners to engage in developmentally appropriate K-12 field observation activities that are challenging, personally meaningful, and authentic. High standards of professional development are essential for these teachers to remain at the forefront of sound educational practices in evolution.
