Dr. Erminio Braidotti Retires

In May of this year, department and university colleagues congratulated Dr. Erminio Braidottion his retirement. When Erminio announced his retirement plans, the news was met with mixed emotions: heartfelt well wishes for him and his family, and heavy-heartedness by department faculty who would lose an engaged colleague whose visible presence, admirable work ethic, and untiring commitment to teaching always distinguished him on our campus and within the department. Erminio was the first WCU professor to receive the inaugural Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award in 1998. His inspired teaching continues to serve as a model for faculty, for his leadership in this area has made him a strong advocate for student learning and faculty development. It is thanks to Erminio that the department has been able to expand its reach with courses on Latin American cinema, culture clusters and Spanish language and literature offerings, as well as his coordinatorship of the Italian language program, not to mention his teaching of Latin and effective advising. At the time Erminio started his career at WCU in 1978, the department was in its early stages of evolution, and we are most grateful that he has been here to help steer and influence its growth through immeasurable service, an ability to compromise, and willingness to collaborate. As a humanitarian, Erminio has been tireless in his efforts to instruct, enlighten, and create a sense of community and acceptance where respect for the individual is one of the fundamental tenets of engagement, be it intellectual, political, or socio-cultural. His tangible contributions reveal his passion for scholarly inquiry, an accomplished service agenda, and a deserved reputation for curiosity and creativity. We wish Erminio well in this next chapter of professional and personal pursuits.
