Frederick Douglass Institute Annual Book Award 2012 ( $500 each)
Frederick Douglass believed in the quality of education to uplift one's mind and prepare oneself for a better and brighter tomorrow. In following Douglass' Legacy, the Frederick Douglass Institute offers annual book awards to four outstanding students who demonstrate integrity and dedication for human betterment as Frederick Douglass. We encourage all students to apply for the book award and support Douglass’ legacy in education and social betterment.This year student applicants were evaluated on the basis of completed application, a 200 word biographical essay, and a 250 word essay on a topic relating to Human Rights. Book Award recipients received their book award at the Annual Patricia Grasty Gaines Multicultural Leadership Awards Dinner on Thursday April 12, 2012. Book award recipients are expected to participate in Frederick Douglass Institute events and serve as Frederick Douglass Institute Ambassadors for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Frederick Douglass Institute Award 2012 ($800 each)
The Frederick Douglass Institute, in collaboration with the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs, offered one-time awards to students for academic excellence, leadership, and community service. In recognition of the value that Douglass placed on Education, Literacy, and Social Justice, the Frederick Douglass Institute presented worthy recipients with financial support to purchase books and other educational expenses. With each Award given, the spirit of Douglass stands alongside the recipient, passing on the keys to freedom, education, and self-empowerment. Students were considered for this one time award, on the basis of the completed application form, meet the criteria, which had minimum GPA requirement of 2.75, be enrolled in a full time academic program at WCU, submit a 300 word Personal Statement and a 600 word essay on a topic mentioned in the application and be in good standing with the Office of Judicial Affairs and Student Assistance. These awards were given at the Office of Multicultural Affairs Academic Award Ceremony on April 17, 2012. Award recipients are expected to participate in Frederick Douglass Institute events and serve as Frederick Douglass Institute Ambassadors for the 2012-2013 academic year.
