Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Lehigh Valley

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers will be paired one-on-one with a child and mentor a “little brother” or “little sister.”  Volunteers are asked to commit for approximately 2 hours per week over the course of a year.

Boys and Girls Club of Allentown

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Allentown is an after-school program that provides a safe and educational environment for children that need help in developing in fitness, health, life skills, career development, and leadership.

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers will assist in mentoring and tutoring the students in the club.  Specifically, volunteers will work with the students in various programs, such as arts and crafts, cooking, and the completion of homework assignments.

Camelot for Children

Camelot for Children, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides a social gathering place for seriously, chronically, terminally ill and disabled children. All of the activities are free of charge and are open to the entire family.

Communities in Schools of the Lehigh Valley

Communities in Schools of Lehigh Valley brings community resources and caring adults into school in order to give students who are at-risk the tools they need to learn successfully, stay in school, and prepare for life.

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers will assist with school-based, one-on-one tutoring and mentoring.  Assistance in all school subjects are need, however, there is a higher demand for math and reading. 

Community Bike Works

Community Bike Works aims to give children alternatives to gangs and to encourage and support them to be successful in school. Community Bike Works provides Allentown children, ages 9-17, with an opportunity to earn a bicycle through a 12 week bike maintenance, safety, and skills class, and offers more traditional after school program activities including homework help, reading enrichment and fun events.

Compeer of the Lehigh Valley

Compeer of Lehigh Valley fosters ongoing recovery from mental illness. Through this organization, individuals are matched in one-to-one friendship relationships with caring, trained community volunteers at least 18 years old.

Community Service Activities:  In Compeer, a volunteer applicant is interviewed, has references checked, receives an orientation, gets matched up in a one-on-one friendship relationship, and receives ongoing support. Volunteers are linked with a person of the same gender who lives nearby, has requested Compeer friendship matching, and is referred in writing by their mental health professional. Training is required and is provided.  In addition, volunteers spend one hour per week with their friend.

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks, activities, and programs.  For instance, individuals who volunteer as a “Volunteer Exhibit Educators” will assist and help inspire visitors of all ages to engage in the exhibits and educational materials provided.   In addition, individuals who volunteer as “Educational Support Staff” will assist the educational staff prepare and present the information to visitors.

Volunteers are required to volunteer for at least 36 hours over a 3-month period.

Interested individuals should visit the website listed above and contact the appropriate individual based on which specific volunteer opportunity one is interested in.  Individuals should also download and complete the volunteer application located at the Da Vinci Science Center.  In addition, individuals will need to provide the Center with appropriate documentation and background clearances as well as complete an interview.

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers have the option to participate within Holy Family Manor in a variety of ways.  Volunteers can read to and visit patients, assist at special events, such as the Manor’s  yearly picnic, Breakfast with Santa, and the Easter egg hunt, and escort patients to and from physical therapy and other appointments and events.

Phoebe Richland is a not for profit health care facility for the elderly. They are a 143 bed, skilled nursing facility, with a 21 bed Alzheimer Unit.

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers will mainly serve as “Patient Escorts.”  In doing so, they will have the opportunity to make new friends while escorting patients to various locations throughout the hospital. 

Volunteers can schedule their hours at their convenience Monday through Friday between 8am and 4pm.   Additionally, tuberculosis testing and background checks will need to be provided.

Community Service Activities:  Volunteers can assist in a wide range of programs and services, including helping senior citizens during meals and activities and participating with children in the after-school and evening programs, homework clubs, mentoring activities, and arts and crafts programs.

Shape It Up!
