Center for Independent Living of South Jersey (CILSJ)

The CILSJ is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to assisting disabled people live independently. The Center provides freedom of choice to work, own a home, and raise a family. CILSJ also promotes general participation to the fullest extent possible in day-to-day activities.

Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester County

Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester County ( LVGC) is the only organization of its kind providing free, one-on-one adult tutoring to those with the lowest level of literacy-below a 5th grade level.  For over 25 years, it has served over 200 Gloucester County residents per year with an all volunteer cadre of individuals.  It is accredited by ProLiteracy America, the only national accreditation system in the adult education and literacy field

Community Service Activities:  Interested individuals have an array of volunteer opportunities at Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester County.  Volunteers assist with student support and tutor support. Volunteers can also assist with tutoring.  Interested individuals who would like to assist with student support will lead a student conversational group on financial and/or health literacy as well as interview and test new students entering the program.  Those individuals who are interested in assisting with tutor support contact current tutors on a regular basis for information, follow-up, and support, facilitate and assist with quarterly "Let's TAlk Cafe" tutor meetings, and assist workshop leaders in preparation for workshops.

Volunteers can also become tutors for adults.  Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester County offer two programs, including Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language.  In the Basic Literacy Program, tutors are matched with adults who need reading, writing, spelling and comprehension instruction.  In the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, tutors provide conversational English to foreign speaking adults. 

Tutors are trained to develop personalized instruction plans for their students.  Tutoring is designed to meet the needs of the students, and instruction is held one-on-one or in small groups in a public place.  Training is required and provided through a 15-hour training class.  The training class is usually held one night a week for 3-hours over the course of 5-weeks.  Tutors are also asked to commit to tutor their student for 1 ½ -2 hours  per week for a year to show student progress.
