Application Procedures

FOR GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Application Packets are available from the Office of Graduate Studies and Sponsored Research (610-436-2943). The Graduate Studies Office will only forward your application to the Graduate Coordinator of Elementary Education when it is complete. All required transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. should be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies as directed in the application packet. West Chester University transcripts are available at the Graduate Studies Office and need not be sent. You can check on the status of your application by calling the Office of Graduate Studies.

Admissions requirements for M.Ed. Program include:

  • a Pennsylvania I Certificate or its equivalent
  • an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0. If the candidate possesses a master's degree, the GPA requirement applies to that degree.
  • completion of one year of full time satisfactory K-12 teaching experience in public or private schools.

Applicants for the Certification Program must meet all of the requirements for Post Baccalaureate Formal Admission Continuation and Completion under PA Chapter #354 and requirements of the Department of Elementary Education. This includes the following :

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Six (6) earned credits in college-level mathematics
  • Six (6) earned credits in college-level English composition and literature
  • Passing scores on the PRAXIS I exam: Pre-Professional Skills Test and Praxis II exam: Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge

Prospective students who have not yet applied to a graduate program or who have not received notification for their admission status may enroll in up to nine graduate credits. The Department of Elementary Education reserves the right to use (or not use) these courses for program requirements. These nine credits will count toward requirements for the degree if formal acceptance into the program is granted.

Students will be assigned an advisor who is a faculty member of the Department of Elementary Education once they have been accepted into either the M.Ed. or Post-baccalaureate Certification program. The name of your advisor will be noted in your acceptance letter from the Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Elementary Education. Students are encouraged to consult with their advisors regularly throughout their programs.
