 The Post-Baccalaureate certification program in Early Childhood Education is open to individuals with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university who desire to teach young children, birth through third grade in public schools. All applicants must meet the following requirements.
Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. (If applicant possesses a master’s
degree, the GPA requirement applies to that degree.)
- Passing scores, as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education,
on the Praxis I (PPST Reading, Writing and Math) examinations.
- Six credits of college-level mathematics, three credits of college-level English
composition, and three credits of literature taught in English.
Formal Admission to Teacher Education
Once students have enrolled in a post-baccalaureate certification
program, they must apply for Formal Admission to Teacher Education. In order
to do so, students must:
- Meet the above program entry requirements
- Receive passing scores as determined by the PA Department of Education on Praxis
I examinations
- Received departmental approval
- File a form in the Teacher Certification Office (Recitation 302)

Certification
Public school teaching in Pennsylvania requires certification.
When you have completed successfully all of the requirements for
certification, the Dean of the College of Education recommends you
to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for certification. This
section contains information on steps to take in order to be recommended
for certification.
- Complete a state-approved teacher education program including
student teaching.
- Achieve passing scores on the appropriate Praxis I and Praxis II exams.
- Assemble and turn in application materials documenting that all certification
requirements have been met to the Teacher Certification Office (Recitation
302).
Changing Graduate Status
Post-Baccalaureate Certification students may choose to petition
the Office of Graduate Studies for a change of status to the M. Ed. program
in Early Childhood Education when they have completed Level I Certification
Coursework. Courses taken at the graduate level during the completion of
the Certification requirements may be counted towards the M. Ed.
Procedures for Application for Admission to the Post-Baccalaureate
Certification Program in Early Childhood Education
Submit completed application to the Graduate Office. Application forms are
available in the Graduate Office (610) 436-2943. Arrange to have two (2) complete
undergraduate transcripts and proof of a baccalaureate degree sent to the Graduate Office.
The transcripts should include the cumulative grade point average of all undergraduate
work.
