Admission to Teacher Education
All students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Education degree must
complete the Application Form for Formal Admission to Teacher Education.
Minimum criteria for admission to Teacher Education as of September
1, 2003 are as follows:
- A minimum of 48 credits earned at the college level
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8
- Achieve a passing score as established by the PA Department of Education
on the Praxis PPST examinations in Reading, Math and Writing
- Completion of 6 credits math, 3 credits writing composition, and 3 credits
literature
- Recommendation by the Department
- Student admitted to Teacher Education must maintain a minimum 2.8
GPA in order to continue taking advanced professional education coursework,
and a 3.0 GPA at completion of program to meet requirements to obtain
Pennsylvania Teacher Certification.
Internal and External Transfer Students
The following policies apply to all transfer
students upon entering the department.
Internal Transfer Students.
» Internal transfer students
(undeclared major or change of major) who desire admission to the Department
of Early Childhood and Special Education may apply after the completion
of 27 semester hours at West Chester University. A minimum cumulative
GPA of 2.65 is required for students with 47 or fewer earned credits
and a 2.8 GPA for students with 48 or more earned credits.
External Transfer Students.
» External transfer students
who desire admission to the Department of Early Childhood and Special
Education must apply for admission to West Chester University. Transfer
credit will be granted for 100- and 200-level courses if the course descriptions
are equivalent and in accordance with University policy. All other
required courses in the professional education and specialized preparation
areas will be evaluated and approved on an individual basis.
Both internal and external transfer students will be admitted as probationary
teacher education students consistent with teacher education policy. Students
in this category may not take designated advanced professional course
work, which requires full admittance to teacher education.
