The 2013 Play 4Kay initiative,(formerly known as Pink Zone) is an opportunity for a nation of coaches and players at Division II schools to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2 million to support women's cancer research. Last year WCU placed #1 in Division II schools for raising the largest pool of money for the Kay Yow Foundation with our annual Play 4 Kay Day.
WCU’s Play 4 Kay Event is hosted by the Women’s Basketball Team in collaboration with the Office of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs, The Women’s Center, SSI, Colleges Against Caner, ZTA, and other student organizations and community partners. The balcony of the gym is transformed into all things pink: pink tables, pink balloons, and pink streamers. This event raises awareness of breast cancer through offering education on detecting breast cancer and the impact of breast cancer on those with the disease, as well as the impact on their loved ones. Money is raised through the sale of t-shirts, ribbon shaped pretzels, pink lemonade, and pink cotton candy, pink hair extensions, face painting, and raffle baskets that contain everything from gift cards to Phillies tickets.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.
