Sexual Harassment or Sex Discrimination Problems

If you or someone you know is in a situation of possible sex harassment or where you think you are being treated unfairly because of your gender, you can get informal support or help with how to handle the problem from the Women's Center (2nd floor Lawrence, 610-436-2122) or the Associate Dean of Students Office (2nd floor Wayne Hall, 610-436-3317). Formal complaints can be filed with the Office of Social Equity (2nd floor Lawrence, 610-436-2433).

Sexual Assault and Rape

Sexual assault and rape are realities. If you or someone you know has been sexually abused or assaulted, we can help you if it is still affecting your life, whether the assault was recent or at some time in the past.

Acquaintance Rape Problems

If this is something that just happened, it is important to tell someone right away. Residence hall staff like R.A.'s, G.A.'s, and R.D.'s are very familiar with how to help. Public Safety (610-436-3311) is also a good resource and available 24 hours a day. Medical care, like STD testing and pregnancy testing is available through the Health Center (610-436-2509). You do not have to tell them you were raped if you do not want. You can simply tell them you had unprotected sex and need follow-up medical care. Emotional support can be accessed by appointment through the Counseling center (2nd floor Lawrence, 610-436-2301) and on a walk-in or phone basis from the Women's Center. If you prefer to get help off-campus, you can call Rape Crisis 24 hours a day (610-692-7273). Inexpensive medical care is available off-campus through Planned Parenthood (610-692-1770) which is within walking distance. If the rapist was a student at WCU, you can get help deciding whether you want to file charges against him or her through the Student Standards Office (610-436-3511). Whether the rape was recent or a long time ago, it is important to remember that you can be helped.

Safety and Security on Campus

West Chester University is constantly working to make our campus safer. If there are areas that you feel are not adequately well-lit, please report these to the Women's Center. The Public Safety office will always provide an escort if you need it on campus. Do not hesitate to call them (610-436-3311). There is an off campus shuttle bus that is in operation Thursday-Sunday nights. The shuttle runs through parts of the borough where students travel a great deal. Even though it may appear to be a hassle, try to plan ahead so you have someone to walk or ride home with, especially when it is dark outside. Library staff on occasions are willing and able to provide rides home after closing hours. Ask at the circulation desk for more details.

Food Issues and Eating Disorders

Information about compulsive eating and other eating disorders are available through the Wellness Student Resource Center (formally known as The PRIDE Center) (610-436-3276). Students seeking individual counseling can contact the Counseling Center (610-436-2301). Informal drop-in listening or guidance about how to help a friend is available through the Women's Center. Students whose physical health is being affected should seek help at the Health Center (610-436-2509).

Relationship Abuse Problems

Help with past or present relationship abuse problems is available by appointment through the Counseling Center (610-436-2301) and on a drop-in bases at the Women's Center (2nd floor Lawrence, 610-436-2122). The Domestic Violence Center of Chester County provides help through their hotlines 24 hours a day (610-431-1430).

What ever problem past or present you or a friend might have, please know that there are many sources for help on campus. If you're not sure where to get help, call the Women's Center (610-436-2122). If we can't help you, we will refer you to someone who can help.
