Our History

WCU's Women's Center has had many helping hands over the years. Here are some highlights of our history. The WCU Women's Center has been in existence for over 25 years. These women met to discuss their concerns and unite to create safe spaces for women. In 1974, the first women's center was up and running! It became a role model for other schools in the years to follow. Women met with others and discussed mutual problems, developed a newsletter, and did surveys via questionnaires to identify women’s issues and how they could be addressed through the center. By the fall of 1976, a free drop-in children's center was created. Through the efforts of both the Women's Center and the Women Studies Program the Institute for Women was established in the spring of 1976. The Institute for Women is an independent body designed to represent the interests of women on the campus. It sponsors a number of activities to enhance the self-esteem and career success of women at the University.

By 1984-85 the a drop-in child care program had achieved enough support and funding to be established as a fully for a licensed child care center which eventually had adequate university support to become an entity separate from the Women’s Center. Gender based violence and equality issues were on the minds of the WCU community. Programming to address these issues became the focus of the center’s activities. Today, there is a Women's Center Club, Take Back the Night Marches, educational programs, and many more activities.

The Women’s Center provides and environment in which one can study, talk, and grow. There are resource files, books, videos, tapes, and so on which are accessible to all. Students can become involved in the center through volunteering, through the Women’s Center Club and by simply coming by and spending time in the center to find out more of what is going on.
