Women's Center Club

The Women’s Center Club is an organization that welcomes all students interested in women’s issues, women’s equality and the empowerment of women. The club takes a leading role in the annual Take Back the Night March. Other activities vary one year to the next depending on the current interests of students involved. See our calendar for detailed information about meeting times and topics or call us to find out more.

SISTAS UNITED
A Celebration of our Essence

Welcome to the Women’s Center’s Web page designed by and created to speak to African American Women. The Women's center provides many services for women from all walks of life. Our social, political, and emotional needs are addressed through various clubs and activities on various topics.

"In keeping with the healing spirit, I encourage you to review this inventory designed by author and spiritual healer Iyanla Vanzant. Iyanla encourages us to explore our consciousness through prayer, patience, forgiveness, faith, and unconditional love. Most importantly, she stresses the importance of recognizing ones individuality and focusing on the things that will enhance it. Enjoy! "
Nikara Whetts, Web page creator and Women’s Center practicum student, Fall, 1998

Take your past experiences and "re language" them using two techniques.
First, write down five, or ten, or twenty different things you thought were "problems" using this sentence:

Yesterday I thought _______________ was a problem.

Then, "re language" that experience with this sentence:

Today I believe ___________ is a divine opportunity to ____________.

Do this every day!

For those in attendance of the Million Woman March, very important issues were raised. Let us not forget the platform issues that are needed to enhance our lives and improve our communities. There is a significant amount of work to do. I have enclosed the platform issues as "Soul Food".

First, we were encouraged to reexamine the influx of drugs targeted toward African American communities and their impact.

Second, we were encouraged to look toward creating more African American educational institutions by the twenty-first century. The focus was for grades K-12.

Third, we were encouraged to explore ways that communities could advance African American women leaving the penal systems.

Fourth, we were encouraged to explore the development of health facilities which will improve the current system and introduce alternative methods.

Fifth, we were encouraged to explore the Rites of Passage center/ academics for continual programming and enrollment periods.

Sixth, we were encouraged to further develop ourselves as professional, entrepreneurs, and / or politicians.

Seventh, we were encouraged to examine women in transitional experiences and facilitate them effectively and progressively.

Eighth, we were encouraged to investigate the Human Rights violations of Africans in the Americas and their effects. Aside from slavery, to you recall the Tusckege Experiment and other violations against us?

Ninth, we were encourage to develop programming for respectful and communal involved environments for the proper interaction of our youth.

Tenth, we were encouraged to explore mechanisms to dissolve homelessness for our men and women who are without shelter.

Eleventh, we were encouraged to take steps prevent the gentrification of our neighborhoods as it relates to public and private housing.

Twelfth, we were encourage to reclaim our rights for the elderly who are in need of programs and support systems to enhance and preserve their quality of life.
