Sykes Employment Opportunities
Positions: Student Director,
Fitness Coordinator, Fitness Monitor, Union Associate
The union on any campus is often referred to
as the "living room" of that campus.
A place within the university "home"
where the university "family" can gather
to enjoy a wide variety of programs and services.
The union serves as the campus community center
whose mission is to provide an atmosphere whereby
students, faculty, staff and guests can gather
to participate in out of classroom experiences.
These experiences may be through cultural, recreational,
educational, and/or social programs and activities.
Sykes Union is that center at West Chester University.
Students employed in Sykes Union are looked upon
as a team whose goal is to serve the campus and
the community, ensuring that the mission stated
above is fulfilled. Each employee, though working
in different areas, is essential to the overall
operation of the building.

As an employee of Sykes Student Union, you are
a representative of the University and have a
great deal of influence of on how the University
is perceived. For this reason, a Sykes Union Associate
is more than a job.
Selection Process
Those who possess a sincere interest in
being an employee of Sykes Student Union should
follow the process outlined below.
Step 1
• Complete an official application and submit
it to the Sykes Information Desk.
Step 2
• The applications will be reviewed and if selected
you will be contacted to participate in the interview
process.
Step 3
• Position offers will be given in writing
Position Descriptions
- Union Associate
Students applying
for Union Associate will be trained and experience
all the areas below. Minimum 2.25 GPA $6.00 per
hour
Duplicating Center Attendant:
The Duplicating Attendant is employed to provide
quality copying and duplicating services in a
timely and friendly manner. Knowledge of and experience
in using a cash register and/or copy machine desirable.
The Duplicating Center Attendant also sells candy
and balloons.
Fitness Center Desk Attendant:
The Fitness Center Desk Attendant is responsible
for the following: serving as a general receptionist,
basic clerical tasks, checking valid WCU ID's,
keeping accurate records on clientele usage.
Information Center Attendant:
The Info Desk Attendant is employed to provide
clear and concise information, via the phone or
in person, about the Union, the University and/or
the community. Responsibilities also include the
distribution of student office keys, monitoring
the lost and found, approving bulletin board postings
and monitoring the lobby and vending sales area.
- Management Positions
Minimum GPA is 2.50
Student Director:
The Sykes Union Student Director is responsible
for the safe and efficient operation of Sykes
on weekday evenings, weekends and other times
when called upon by the Director of Sykes Union.
The Student Director acts as an extension of the
central building administrative staff. As such,
the SD is fully charged and authorized to run
the facility. The SD also acts as a supervisor
to the other Sykes Union employees listed above.
The starting wage is $8 per hour
Fitness Center
Coordinator: The West Chester
University, Sykes Union Fitness Center Coordinator
is employed to provide expertise in the areas
of physical fitness, weight training, wellness,
and nutrition. These individuals are graduate
students in the department of Kinesiology. Starting
Wage is $10 per hour.
- Other Positions
Minimum GPA is 2.50
Fitness
Center Floor Monitor: The Fitness
Center Floor Monitor is responsible for the following:
instructing and assisting the clientele of the
Center in the use of the weight equipment and
exercise machines, overall monitoring of the activities
of the Center, and equipment maintenance and light
cleaning of the Center. Qualifications include
current certification in CPR and Basic First Aid.
Starting wage for Monitors is $6.25 per hour.
