Verification

The U.S. Department of Education selects students for verification. It is a process for confirming the accuracy of the information students and parents provide on the FAFSA. West Chester University also may select students for verification when the FAFSA data appears incomplete or conflicting.

NOTE: When completing a FAFSA, students and parents who are able to utilize the "IRS Data Retrieval Tool" may be exempted from having to provide an IRS Tax Transcript to the WCU Financial

Aid Office.

THE ANTICIPATED FEDERAL AID IN YOUR PACKAGE IS A GOOD FAITH/BEST ESTIMATE. VERIFICATION MAY CHANGE

THE VALUE OF THE AID OFFERED IN YOUR PACKAGE. AID WILL NOT BE POSTED/PAID TO YOUR ACCOUNT UNTIL THE VERIFICATION IS COMPLETE.*

Selected students will receive instructions via their WCU email account on how to complete this process. The Financial Aid Office will request information to confirm the data on the FAFSA. These documents may include, but are not limited to, IRS Tax Transcripts, W-2 forms, documentation of asset value and debt, confirmation of household size and number in college. Students and parents are encouraged to submit ALL requested documents within 30 days of the date request. You are responsible for calling the IRS at 1-800-908-9946 to order a tax transcript or by ordering online at www.irs.gov. Tax transcripts (see sample) are free and will take 5 to 10 days to arrive in the mail. You can obtain copies of W-2 forms from employers. Submitting forms and documents that have not been requested will complicate and burden the process, this includes sending multiple copies of materials. Always include the student’s name and WCU ID# on all materials. Make certain that all documents are complete, legible and signed by all parties, as appropriate.

NOTE: The WCU Financial Aid Office is NO LONGER allowed to accept federal forms 1040/1040A/1040EZ whether prepared by the student/parent or a by a tax preparer. We can only accept

IRS Tax Transcripts beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year.

While our policy permits time to gather information needed to complete the verification process, we encourage you to provide this information to the Financial Aid Office as quickly as possible. *Funds can not be released for off-campus expenses until the verification process is complete. Any tentative credit applied to your University bill may be removed at any time during the verification process.
