Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students

The PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) enables parents with good credit histories to borrow funds to help pay educational expenses for each dependent child enrolled at least half-time. The yearly loan limit is the cost of attendance minus all other financial aid. Parents are notified both by the school and lender of the amount awarded.

The PLUS has a fixed interest rate for the current year of 8.50%.. A maximum origination fee of 4% is deducted from the loan proceeds. We suggest, as mentioned in the PLUS application process in the previous section, that parents apply for these loans on www.aessuccess.org. Normally, loans are "doubly disbursed," which means half of the loan is disbursed in the fall and half in the spring, right before the start of each semester. Loan repayment generally begins 60 days after the entire loan has been disbursed. Many lenders have more flexible repayment terms. Parents should contact lenders for this information.

Parents should apply for PLUS in early June. An estimate of costs and other financial aid is available on the student financial aid notification, mailed in early April for 1st-year students, and in June for returning students. These estimates should be a general guide to assist in deciding how much to borrow in a PLUS.
