Alternative Loans

Alternative loans are private funds that are usually used to supplement students' or families' financial aid packages. They bridge the gap between the cost of attendance and federal and state grants and loans. These loans are based on credit-worthiness and sometimes borrower and co-borrower income. Each lender has different rates and terms. Students are strongly encouraged to borrow with a co-signer to increase the chances of loan approval and a better interest rate.

Students and families are encouraged to search for lenders who provide the best interest rates, no fees or low fees, exemplary customer service and convenient repayment management options. Consider each lender's pricing process and credit criteria. All lender web sites should be visited and researched carefully.

Students and families should "comparison shop," carefully considering which loan program best meets their individual needs and concerns.
