Revised August 2005

Latin American Studies

Latin American studies is an interdisciplinary program intended to provide you, as a student, with a thorough understanding of Latin America. You will major in a subject such as political science, history, or business, and minor or concentrate in Latin American studies.

The program is especially meant for those of you who have a personal interest in Latin America, or who have future career aspirations in the field of Latin American studies. The program provides you with a basic knowledge of the language, and a thorough understanding of the Latin American cultural heritage. You also can get additional training in particular disciplines.

Career Preparation

If you minor in Latin American studies, you will be well prepared for continuing your study in graduate programs or through study abroad. Those who wish to work with a company that deals with Latin America will be well prepared for such work.

Programs Offered

Upon completion of the program, you will receive a minor in Latin American studies and a letter of verification attesting to your area of concentration. Eighteen credit hours are required for the minor. Two possible concentration tracks are available:

Track A consists of a foreign language requirement (either Spanish or Portuguese 201-202 or above), plus two courses in Latin American history, and two related electives, for a total of 18 credits.

Track B consists of two courses in Latin American history plus four courses in related disciplines (anthropology, geography, politics, culture, or literature) for a total of 18 credits.
