  WCU Water Conservation Policy

Attached is a list of conservation measures for our residence halls, offices, and homes that can significantly reduce water consumption if we each do our part. While these "small" efforts donít appear to make a difference at first glance, they have a major impact when seen from a campus-wide perspective. If everyone takes water conservation seriously, little sacrifices can add up to many thousands of gallons of water saved.

WATER CONSERVATION MEASURES
o  Don't leave the water run while brushing teeth or shaving.
o  Take shorter showers and turn off the flow while soaping or shampooing.
o  Refrigerate a bottle of drinking water instead of letting a faucet flow until the water is cold enough to drink.
o  Use a dishpan or plug the sink for washing and rinsing dishes. Pre-rinsing dishes prior to loading in a dishwasher is an unnecessary and wasteful use of water.
o  Operate the washing machine and dishwasher only when they are fully loaded.
o  Use the proper water level or load size selection on the washing machine.
o  If possible, skip additional rinse cycles.
o  Only wash full loads of clothes.
o  Recycle rinse water from the dishwater or redirect it to the garbage disposal.
o  Do not use running water to melt ice or frozen foods. If necessary, use ponded water.
o  Use water-conserving ice makers.
o  Pre-soak utensils and dishes in ponded water instead of using a running water rinse.
o  Wash vegetables in ponded water; do not let water run in preparation sink.
