Departments and Services
Project Planning
Project Planning provides
long and short term strategic facilities infrastructure planning. This includes
five year expenditure plans for Commonwealth funded capital programs, Educational & General
funds,
Resident Halls and Student Union deferred maintenance programs. Project
Planning helps to establish the initial scope of projects, places projects in
the appropriate budgetary program for consideration and, when funded, helps
initiate the implementation of the project. Building floor space plans,
emergency evacuation diagrams and inventories of certain building systems and
assets are maintained.
Energy Management
The Energy Management Office monitors the University’s energy consumption to assure that usage is efficient and economical. To conserve our resources, this Office reviews our consumption of electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, water, and sewage. It also manages energy conservation projects, such as the Guaranteed Energy Savings Project which will implement a number of energy-conservation measures and is expected to result in a significant reduction in energy consumption and costs over the next few years.
Motor Pool and Automotive Shop
The University operates a fleet of 91 vehicles. The Motor Pool makes these vehicles available for use by faculty and staff to carry out the operational functions of the University. The Automotive Shop schedules vehicles for use by faculty and staff, monitors fuel usage, performs required inspections, and keeps vehicles and grounds equipment running smoothly. For Motor Pool policies, see WCU Vehicle Policy.
Shuttle Bus Service
The University operates a shuttle bus service between the Main Campus and various South Campus destinations, such as the Health Sciences Center, student parking lots and student apartments. The bus service operates seven days per week when classes are in session during the Spring and Fall Semesters, and on a limited basis during Summer School. For a schedule of departure times, see Bus Schedule
Work Control
Work Control is a
communications hub for Facilities handling over 20,000 work orders each year.
It screens all work requests converting the acceptable ones into work orders and
assigning them to the appropriate shop/group/department for accomplishment. For
our management software, we use the Enterprise version of TMA.
Work requests are submitted via web browser through iService Desk.
Heating Plant
The Heating Plant operates
three coal and two oil fired boilers to generate steam which is piped throughout the campus for building heat. Besides a 24 hour operation during the
heating season, they maintain a network of underground steam pipes which runs
throughout the campus.
