Internships
Internships in marketing are designed to provide a substantive work experience in the business world, as a means of enhancing a student's educational experience.
Overview
Enrollment in marketing internships has been between 60 and 80 per year over the last three years. About two-thirds are in the summer.
The overwhelming majority of interns are paid for their work. The hourly rate ranges from $9.00 to $15.00, with the majority of positions in the $10.00 to $12.00 range.
About 100 area employers actively recruit marketing interns.
These employers represent
more than 20 industries, including:
consumer products marketing; marketing research
agencies; pharmaceutical marketing/marketing research; software services
marketing/marketing research; financial services marketing; sales training; advertising.
Geographically, during the fall and spring, most internships are in a triangular area bounded by Exton, King of Prussia, and Wilmington, Delaware.
A number of positions also are available in the Philadelphia area.
Particularly during the summer, the
hiring area tends to expand to include New Jersey and New York City.
Criteria
Students must be in good academic standing (minimum g.p.a. of 2.00) and have completed MKT 325: Marketing Management with a grade of C or better. Additional requirements vary by position and are subject to the approval of the Marketing Internship Coordinator, Marketing Department Chair, and the Dean of the School of Business and Public Affairs.
Internship Position must provide for a minimum of 180 hours of work for 3 credits, and a minimum of 360 hours for 6 credits. For the Fall and Spring semesters, any student who schedules a 6 credit internship must have a cumulative gpa of 3.25 or higher and will be limited to a total of 15 credits for that semester.
The employer must designate an individual who agrees to be responsible for direct supervision of the intern. This individual must be someone who has responsibility for any number of marketing functions, although "marketing" does not need to in the title of their position.
The work must contain approved marketing content, as determined by the Marketing Internship Coordinator. Most positions included on the intern employer listing have already been approved. Examples of approved content would include advertising, inside or outside business-to-business sales, marketing event or trade show coordination, and marketing research. Examples of positions that are generally not approved include virtually all retail sales positions and inbound telemarketing operations.
Interns may not work either directly or indirectly for a relative or in organizations in which a relative is a supervisor, executive, principal / partner, major shareholder, or sole proprietor.
