Ergonomics is the study of a person's work environment and the effects that that environment has on the person, his/her productivity, and thus the cost effectiveness of the company. The concept is simple, and yet there are many implications for this kind of science. It includes things such as the design of better chairs to prevent back strain for those sitting all day, to changes in the design of a computer screen to be better on the eyes. Not only do ergonomists look at physical strain of doing one's specific job, but the environmental factors that may effect one's productivity, like air quality, noise, and lighting.
As far as physical stresses in the work environment, ergonomists are concerned with repetitive tasks that can cause injury, like typing. The other main way to incur injury from one's work environment is working in an awkward position. Not only are ergonomists concerned with preventing injury, but also in increasing productivity for their company. After all, a comfortable employee will work more efficiently than an uncomfortable one. Ergonomists developed products such as the gel wrist pads for computers, ergonomically correct chairs, and better lighting.
