Environmental Psychology and Art

The places we spend our time affect the people we are and who we will become. Some environments, such as our workspace, have a tendency to be "occupant unfriendly." Often, in an office, the employees that do company travel are the ones that have offices with the most windows while those who stay behind are secluded to less enjoyable space. Some other mood factors found among employees are:

Recent research has shown that there is a clear relationship between how people view the area they work in and their productivity levels on the job. One little change, such as bringing art into the office can affect employees quite positively. The goal of introducing art to the workplace is to reduce stress, create better attitudes, enhance employee commitment, and promote increased morale. There are many art firms that do just that. The goal is to safeguard, repair, and improve employees' feelings about their offices by using art to enrich their daily experiences.

This idea of using art is even found in the San Francisco International Airport. In 1980, the airport collaborated with the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco to create a museum in the airport. The goal was to capture the unique culture of the San Francisco Bay Area and to humanize the airport environment. It has had positive effects on both passengers and the employees.
